SCAM ALERT! The Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports of scammers impersonating a deputy sheriff to scare residents into giving them money. We’re told the scammer identified himself as a “Sergeant Coleman from the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Department” and claimed the resident failed to comply with a subpoena. The scammer told the resident that to avoid arrest, the resident must pay a bond over the phone immediately.

Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan wants to warn residents that this is a SCAM. There is no Sgt. Coleman employed at the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office. Law enforcement agencies do not call offenders to warn them about impending arrest warrants. Furthermore, we will never ask for payment over the phone or negotiate a payment/bond instead of arrest. Anyone with questions about a warrant may contact the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office at (757) 382-6159.

Just having enough supplies to make it through a hurricane isn’t enough. You need plenty to make it through what could be a LONG recovery period, too.

Water and electricity could be out for a week or more. Have enough non-perishable food, water, and medicine to last each person in your family for a MINIMUM of three days. Also, make sure you have extra cash, a battery-powered radio, flashlights, and a portable crank or solar-powered USB charger to charge your cell phone. 🎒 https://bit.ly/3LGrCpC

It has come to our attention that someone is spoofing our police department phone numbers and calling members of the public asking them to pay fines in either gift cards or bitcoin. The Chesapeake Police Department will never call you asking for you to pay fines. If you receive one of these phone calls please contact our dispatch center to report it (757-382-6161).
