Summer road trip season is here. Before you load the car for the drive, five minutes under the hood can prevent a much longer day on the side of the road.

Check your transmission fluid level. On vehicles with a dipstick, the fluid should be red to light brown, not dark brown or black, and the level should be between the hot and cold marks with the engine at operating temperature. On sealed transmissions without a dipstick, a service check is needed at a shop.

Look underneath the vehicle for any fresh fluid. Transmission fluid is typically red. Brake fluid is amber. Coolant is green, orange, or pink. Engine oil is dark brown to black. Any fresh spot that was not there before is worth investigating.

If the vehicle is due for any service or showing any symptoms that have been easy to ignore around town, it is better to handle them before you are 400 miles from home on a holiday weekend.

Tech Tip Tuesday: U-Joints and CV Joints

Universal joints and constant velocity joints both have one job. They let a driveshaft or axle shaft transmit rotational power through an angle, as the suspension moves up and down.

U-joints are found in rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles, typically at each end of the driveshaft. They use a simple cross-shaped design with four bearing cups. CV joints are found in front-wheel drive vehicles and on independent rear suspensions, using internal ball bearings to transmit power more smoothly at steeper angles.

A bad u-joint produces a clunk when shifting between drive and reverse, a vibration that increases with speed, and sometimes a squeak that changes with vehicle speed. A bad CV joint produces a clicking or popping sound during turns, especially under acceleration, and in later stages a grinding sensation that transfers through the steering.

Either failure, left unaddressed, progresses to a roadside breakdown.

Happy belated birthday to Moed Al-Kanany, one of our Shop Foremen.

Moed celebrated his birthday last week. He joined the team last fall and brings a calm, methodical approach to the kind of complex work a shop foreman handles every day. His experience shows in the quality of the repairs that leave this shop.

Hope you had a great one, Moed.

15 years. Gerald "Jay" Smith Jr. joined Edwards Transmissions+ on June 3, 2011. Fifteen years later, he continues to serve as a core part of our management team.

Fifteen years in one shop tells you something about both the person and the place. It means the person has committed to the trade, put in the work, and built the kind of judgment that only comes from experience. It also means the shop built a culture worth staying in.

Jay has been part of how Edwards Transmissions+ operates for a decade and a half. The customers he has helped, the technicians he has supported, and the problems he has solved along the way are the foundation of why this business still runs the way it does.

Thank you, Gerald. 15 years is a milestone that speaks for itself.

Summer is harder on transmissions than winter.

That fact surprises most drivers, but the mechanics are straightforward. Transmission fluid operates best in a relatively narrow temperature window. Below that window, fluid is thick and hydraulic response is slow. Above it, fluid thins, oxidizes, and loses its ability to protect internal components.

Indiana summers regularly push transmission fluid to the upper end of that window, especially in traffic, when towing, and during extended highway driving in hot weather. Every 20 degrees above normal operating temperature cuts fluid life roughly in half.

Check your transmission fluid level and condition before extended drives. Avoid idling in drive for long periods at stoplights in heavy traffic. If you tow regularly, an auxiliary transmission cooler is one of the best long-term investments you can make. And if your vehicle has not had a transmission service in the past 50,000 to 75,000 miles, now is the right time to schedule one.

The biggest weekend in Indianapolis is behind us.

Over 300,000 visitors. A million conversations about cars. The west side of the city back to its normal hum. Memorial Day spent the way it should be.

For us at Edwards Transmissions+, this weekend is a reminder of what this city is built on. Hard work. Skilled hands. A culture that respects what happens under the hood.

We have been serving Central Indiana drivers for 40+ years. Through 44 of the city's biggest weekends. Through every era of automotive change. Through generations of customers who trusted us with their vehicles, and trusted their kids to drive vehicles we worked on.

May closes. Summer begins. Seven locations are here when you need us.

A big week for Francisco Valle.

Francisco celebrated his 7-year anniversary with Edwards Transmissions+ on May 28 and his birthday on May 29.

Francisco serves as our Shop Foreman, a role that requires both technical depth and the ability to lead other technicians through complex diagnostic and repair work. Seven years into this job, his knowledge of transmissions and his steady presence in the shop are a real asset to our team and to every customer who comes through our doors.

Happy birthday and thank you for seven years, Francisco.

Tech Tip Tuesday: The Torque Converter Lockup Clutch

The torque converter lets an automatic transmission-equipped vehicle sit still at idle without stalling. It does that by using fluid coupling instead of a direct mechanical connection between the engine and transmission.

That fluid coupling is efficient for launching the vehicle, but at highway speeds it wastes energy through what is called slippage. To eliminate that loss, modern torque converters include a lockup clutch that mechanically locks the engine and transmission together once the vehicle reaches cruising speed.

When the lockup clutch operates correctly, fuel economy improves and transmission fluid temperature drops. When it fails, the symptoms are specific. A shudder that feels like a rumble strip at steady highway speeds, between roughly 40 and 60 mph. Hesitation when the torque converter tries to lock. Increased fuel consumption that shows up on the highway, not around town.

Shudder in the torque converter lockup clutch is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed transmission symptoms. It often gets blamed on tires or engine misfires. A proper diagnosis at a transmission-focused shop identifies it correctly the first time.

Today is Memorial Day.

For all the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country, we remember you. For the families who carry that loss, we stand with you.

At Edwards Transmissions+, our own president, Carla Tyner, is a United States veteran. Her service, and the service of every member of our armed forces, is not lost on us. Today is a day to pause, recognize the cost, and honor the lives behind the freedoms we too often take as ordinary.

From all of us at Edwards Transmissions+, thank you.

Tech Tip Tuesday: The Planetary Gear Set

The planetary gear set is the mechanical core of most automatic transmissions. It is how a single input shaft produces multiple output gear ratios without requiring the transmission to physically move gears in and out of engagement like a manual transmission does.

The configuration is simple in principle. A central sun gear sits in the middle. Surrounding it, a set of planet gears orbit and mesh with the sun. An outer ring gear surrounds all of them. By holding one component stationary and driving another, the transmission produces different gear ratios.

What makes this powerful is that multiple planetary sets can be combined and controlled by clutch packs and bands to produce six, eight, ten, or even more forward gears from a compact package.

When a planetary gear set fails, the symptoms are immediate and severe. A missing gear, a loud whining noise, metal debris in the pan, or complete loss of drive in certain ranges.

Diagnosing planetary-related failures requires teardown. There is no external scan that confirms which gear set is damaged. This is the kind of repair specialist shops handle every week.
