Exhaust is one of the quieter reasons a truck fails a Pennsylvania inspection. 🔧

It does not have to be loud to fail. A pipe rusted through ahead of the muffler, a hanger that has let a section drop, or a leak at a joint will all do it, and from inside the cab you may hear nothing at all. What people sometimes notice first is a faint exhaust smell at idle with the windows down.

The grime that builds up around a shift plate is not dust. It is hand oil, which collects all kinds of debris. 🧼

Wiping it just moves it around. What takes it off is a brush worked into the seam around the plate and along the cupholder edges, then a wipe before it dries back down. Both photos here are the same console, an afternoon apart.

With the wheel off, a drum brake tells you most of what you need to know pretty quickly. 🔧

You are looking for how much shoe material is left, whether the drum has a ridge worn into it, and whether there is dark dust or a wet streak running down from the wheel cylinder. That streak could be brake fluid getting past a seal, and it does not stop on its own.

From the driver's seat the tell is different. A drum out of adjustment gives you a long pedal, and one that is grabbing pulls the truck to that side when you slow down.

Labor Day is a holiday for the shop. It is not a holiday for batteries, alternators, or tires. Nights, weekends, holidays, whatever the weather is doing, the tow line goes to someone who can come get you.

Three things under your hood you can check yourself in about two minutes. 🔧

Coolant level in the overflow bottle, read cold and never with the cap off a hot engine. Brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir, which should sit near the full line and look closer to honey than coffee. And the battery terminals, where a white or blue crust means the connection is going.

The test that matters is the draw test. Leads on the battery, everything switched off, and you watch what the vehicle is still pulling once it should be asleep. A healthy vehicle draws almost nothing. Anything more and something is pulling power that should not be.

A brake caliper that looks like this still works. That is what makes it easy to ignore. 🔧

Surface rust on the housing is normal in Pennsylvania. What matters is whether the slide pins still move freely. When they seize, one pad wears down to the backing while the other stays thick, and the pedal can still feel normal the whole time.
