Jasons t34 cabrio continues to move forward. He wanted to do an IRS transmission swap but keep the swing axle subframe. This required welding on brackets to accommodate the IRS suspension parts. Taking on new challenges is part of the fun. Rear suspension was cleaned and painted. Now ready to be reassembled

Always blessed to have visitors to the factory. Today our good friend, Josh, dropped by. He and the family are out visiting from Illinois and we chatted vw’s and had dinner. It’s been about a decade since we’ve seen each other but with good friends it only seems like yesterday.

Finding someone who can do the work correct even if it means fabricating parts is important. Pedro used his knowledge from building racks to correctly bend the gas tank breather pipe to fit Jasons T34 cabrio. Other picture is what not to do

At the end of a long day, I find a small thing or two to get done before calling it a day. Yesterday, I sprayed the inside of the fender wells with undercoating and cleaned the shop a little. It’s doing the small things that get projects done ahead of schedule.

The goal for the week is to get the pan done and to get the last few bits of body work done. Got the reinforcements on the underside of the pan cut and welded in. Next was grind, seal and paint. Very happy with how it turned out.

One of the hardest parts of doing a restoration, besides money, if funding consistant motivation. Have Pedro around and watching how nothing stops him from progressing has taught me to keep going and stay focused. Easy to get sidetracked for sure.

Another part to consider when doing a restoration is how far down to go on the existing paint. Jason’s car has lots of pick marks which looked to be solvent pop from the previous paint job. I considered just a scuff and shoot as the body is quite straight and no rust to be found. However after talking it over with Pedro, I decided a car like this should have no surprises in the years to come. In painting prep is everything. I was glad that I did take it all the way down as there were at least 4 different layers of paint/primer underneath and with 2-3 coats of primer and 4 coats of paint that I will spray, it would have likely had some negative results not to mention it rounds out the sharp lines of a t34.

Sometimes hours and hours of tedious work doesn’t feel like progress but it’s all got to get done, especially if your friends will be looking inside the fender wells 🤔
