AC work - it’s that time of the year!

This ambulance had evidence of an AC leak, here we are testing the system with nitrogen and soapy water.

Don’t worry - the ambulance is back in service!

This is why diagnostics matter.

This is a 2012 VW, the vehicle would randomly die, and may or may not restart. It had a P0087 (low pressure code) and the aftermarket dealer put a new high pressure pump in it, didn’t resolve the issue.

There is a low pressure pump in the tank which pushes fuel to the high-pressure pump after the high-pressure pump is the fuel pressure sensor, if either pump failed, it would still set the same code.

What you’re looking at in the picture is an induction clamp around the feed wire for the low pressure pump (the picture is after repair).

VW states it should draw around 8 amps, when the test was done before repair, it started at 9 1/2 and after 30 minutes was over 14 amps. The fuel pump driver (the little silver box) shut off the circuit to protect it from being overloaded.

Long story short, it means the low pressure fuel pump was dying, it would draw more amperage than the driver module would allow and the module would shut it off inducing the low pressure code. There was likely nothing wrong with the original high-pressure pump.

The icing on the cake? The high-pressure pump cost more money alone than the low pressure pump, labor to change it, and the diagnostics…

This is a good example of a buyer beware:

While inspecting any vehicle on of the things to look for is the crisp edge of a body line. The dies used to stamp the panel are computer machined and don’t have variations.

When looking at this car you can see the body line (red arrows) on the drivers side wavers and lacks some of the crisp stamping line. (Compare it to the passenger side).

Sure enough when you look inside the fender, you can see where holes were drilled to pull the sheet metal back out and then simply filler coated over. Within the next 12 to 18 months, this fender is going to have rust problems which will induce that filler to separate.

The cost to secure a new fender is roughly the same as having the bodywork done and its faster. Why not just get a new fender?

This leads to the final question, “if this corner was cut, what other corners were cut?”
