One of our students recently created this drawing to demonstrate the SMOG technique, and it was voted as the class favorite!

SMOG stands for:

Signal
Mirror
Over the shoulder
Go

This simple process helps drivers safely change lanes by checking their surroundings before moving over. While it may seem like a small habit, taking those extra few seconds can help prevent crashes and improve awareness on the road.

At Today's Driving School, we focus on building safe driving habits that students can carry with them long after they earn their license.

Great work to our student artist, and thank you for helping showcase an important driving skill! ๐Ÿ‘

๐ƒ๐ข๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐ค๐ง๐จ๐ฐ? That in some parts of the world, motorcycles are capable of traveling in places cars simply canโ€™t including across frozen lakes, deserts, mountains, and even through dense jungle terrain?

In fact, specially modified motorcycles have been used in everything from Arctic expeditions to cross-country endurance races spanning thousands of miles across some of the harshest environments on Earth. Their lightweight design and maneuverability make them incredibly versatile compared to larger vehicles.

Itโ€™s a reminder that motorcycles arenโ€™t just a mode of transportation โ€” theyโ€™ve become part of exploration, engineering, and adventure culture all around the world.

As Motorcycle Awareness Month comes to a close, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on why this topic matters so much.

Over the past several weeks, weโ€™ve shared information about motorcycle visibility, safe driving habits, lane filtering and lane splitting, crash statistics, and the importance of staying alert behind the wheel. While motorcycles make up a smaller percentage of vehicles on the road, riders face significantly greater risks due to their size, visibility, and lack of physical protection in a crash.

One of the biggest takeaways from this month is that awareness goes beyond simply โ€œlooking twice.โ€ Safe driving requires patience, focus, and actively processing the environment around us โ€” especially at intersections, during lane changes, and in heavy traffic where motorcycles can be more vulnerable.

Weโ€™ve also discussed how small decisions can make a major difference: checking blind spots carefully, giving riders extra space, using signals early, and avoiding distracted driving. These habits may seem simple, but they can help prevent serious and sometimes life-changing crashes.

At Todayโ€™s Driving School, our goal has always been to help create safer, more confident, and more aware drivers. Motorcycle Awareness Month is a reminder that road safety is shared responsibility, and every driver plays a role in protecting the people around them.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to read, engage with, and share our motorcycle awareness posts throughout May. We hope these conversations continue long after the month ends.

Stay alert, stay patient, and continue sharing the road safely. ๐Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿš˜

As Memorial Day approaches, we would like to take a moment to pause and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice, courage, and dedication to protecting our freedoms deserve our deepest respect and gratitude.

As many spend the weekend traveling, gathering with loved ones, or enjoying time together, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of the holiday and honor those who never made it home.

Please note that our office will be closed on Monday, May 25th, in observance of Memorial Day. We will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, May 26th, and will respond to any messages received during the closure as promptly as possible.

From all of us at Todayโ€™s Driving School, we wish everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend. โค๏ธ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’™

Did you know many motorcycles are designed so that if they tip over, the handlebars and foot pegs hit the ground first โ€” not the engine?

This design helps protect some of the most important (and expensive) parts of the bike. By allowing these outer components to take the impact, it can reduce damage to the engine and other critical systems, especially in low-speed tip-overs or when a bike is dropped while parked.

In many cases, riders can simply lift the bike back up and continue riding with minimal damage. Some motorcycles even include additional protective features like frame sliders or crash bars for extra protection.

Itโ€™s a small design detail that makes a big difference in durability and safety.

Motorcycles make up a small portion of vehicles on the road, but the risks riders face are significantly higher.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists were involved in over ๐Ÿ”,๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐Ÿ๐š๐ญ๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘, making up about ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“% ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ ๐๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ก๐ฌ.

One key reason? Motorcycles donโ€™t have the same protection as cars, and their smaller size can make them harder to see in traffic. Because of this, both drivers and riders play a critical role in preventing crashes โ€” from staying visible to checking blind spots and staying alert at intersections.

The takeaway is simple: awareness and attention go a long way in keeping everyone safer on the road.

Did you know the first motorcycle ever created (1885) was actually made out of wood?

Built by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, it looked more like a wooden bicycle with a small engine attached than what we think of as a motorcycle today. Because early engines produced a lot of vibration and the design wasnโ€™t very stable, it even had small outrigger wheels on the sides to help keep it upright.

This early invention, often called the โ€œReitwagen,โ€ was less about speed and more about proving that an engine-powered two-wheeled vehicle was possible โ€” something that would eventually evolve into the motorcycles we see on the road today.

Motorcycles make up a relatively small portion of vehicles on the road โ€” but the data behind them might surprise you.

According to the National Safety Council, motorcycles account for only about 3% of registered vehicles, yet they make up over 15% of all traffic fatalities.

This highlights an important reality: motorcyclists face a much higher level of risk, not just because of speed, but because of visibility, exposure, and the lack of protection compared to other vehicles.

For drivers, this is a reminder of how important awareness really is. Taking an extra second to check mirrors, blind spots, and intersections can make a real difference when sharing the road.

Today, we recognize the people who show up with patience, support, and care โ€” the ones who guide, encourage, and stand beside us through lifeโ€™s big moments.

For many new drivers, some of those moments happen in the passenger seat. The quiet reassurance, the gentle corrections, the deep breaths at four-way stops... it all plays a part in building confidence behind the wheel. Those experiences often become memories that stick with us long after the lesson is over.

To everyone who helps guide and support new drivers, thank you. The time, patience, and care you give truly leaves a lasting impact. โค๏ธ
