Quantum Paint began over 10 years ago when University of South Carolina grads were cleaning up a secondhand 17-foot day boat. The paint on the boat was peeling, dirty, and chalky, and the craft needed some serious TLC to get back in the water. The duo wasn’t satisfied with their available paint options, and Martin, already familiar with current aerospace coatings, started tinkering in his garage t
o combine the aerospace technology with marine paint. The finished product —now EMC2’s signature Quantum technology—inspired Boswell to launch a company to meet the need for better marine coatings. They started EMC2 while both working other full-time jobs, and sunk $1,500 and a whole lot of nights, weekends, and lunch breaks into getting it off the ground. After graduating from Charleston, S.C.’s Harbor Accelerator Program, they teamed up with industry vet Steve Schultz to produce and distribute the Quantum Paint product line.
