The Ford Model T engine had no water pump. Coolant moved by thermosiphon: hot water rises, cold water sinks. No fuel pump. Gasoline flowed from the tank to the carburetor by gravity. No battery was required. A flywheel-mounted magneto generated its own ignition current. No oil pump in the conventional sense. The engine and the two-speed planetary transmission shared the same lubricating oil in a common sump. 177 cubic inches. 22 horsepower. Three main bearings. A monobloc iron casting with a detachable cylinder head, which was so unusual in 1908 that other manufacturers came to Piquette Avenue just to see how Ford did it. This engine was produced continuously from September 27, 1908, through August 4, 1941. Exactly 12,000 days. Ward's named it one of the 10 Best Engines of the 20th Century.

The monobloc was the revolution. In 1908, most engines used an aluminum crankcase with separate cast-iron cylinders bolted on individually or in pairs. Expensive. Complicated. Prone to leaks. Ford cast all four cylinders and the upper crankcase as a single iron unit. One casting. One machining operation. One assembly step. The detachable cylinder head was equally radical: it allowed valve jobs without removing the engine, something no competing design offered. The L-head valvetrain was enclosed and sealed from road dust by 1911. The whole engine was designed so a farmer with basic tools could service it in a barn. That wasn't an afterthought. That was the primary design requirement.

The ignition system was the strangest and most durable component. Sixteen magnets embedded in the flywheel spun past sixteen coils in the stationary stator, generating alternating current between 5 and 32 volts depending on engine speed. This current fed four trembler coils (one per cylinder), each of which stepped up the voltage and fired its spark plug. Timing was adjusted manually via a lever on the steering column that rotated the timer. No distributor. No points in the modern sense. No battery required. The system tolerated almost infinite wear and misadjustment. It ran nearly forever. An electric starter became optional in 1919 but wasn't standard on all models until 1926, and even then, the magneto ignition was retained alongside the battery system.

Fifteen million Model Ts were sold between 1908 and 1927. By the early 1920s, more than half of all registered automobiles on Earth were Fords. The engine ran on gasoline, kerosene, or ethanol. The car sold for $850 in 1909 and $290 by 1924. The cheapest car on the market was also one of the most reliable, and that paradox was entirely the engine's doing. No water pump. No fuel pump. No battery. Pure simplicity. 15 million cars. The engine that put America on wheels.

We did an extensive tune up on it. No rear brakes, Leaking Fuel Pump. Rusty metal lines, blown wheel cylinders, out of time, And was over charging at 18 volts! Yikes! Just because it's pretty doesn't mean it's roadworthy!
We fixed all that up and got it back on the road.
