Tires that were fine in July are not automatically fine in January.

Tread that's getting low still works on dry pavement in October. Add rain, slush and cold, and the same tire takes a lot longer to stop. On a rear-drive BMW that shows up fast.

So before winter, we measure. Not eyeball, measure, with a gauge, on every tire, inside edge and out. If you've got plenty left, great, you'll hear that. If you're close, better to know now while you've got time to choose, not in a snowstorm.

It's going to happen some morning this month. You'll walk out to a cold car, start it, and the tire-pressure light will be on.

Nothing's leaking. Air shrinks when it gets cold, roughly a pound of pressure for every ten degrees the temperature drops. A 30-degree swing overnight is enough to trip the light on a BMW or MINI.

The fix is to set the pressures to the number on the door jamb, cold. What you shouldn't do is top them up and forget about it, because low tires in the wet are a grip problem, not just a light.

If the light keeps coming back, that's a different story. Bring it in and we'll find out why.
