Tech Tip Tuesday 🔧 Vacuum Leaks Can Make Your Engine Run Lean

If your vehicle is running rough, idling high, misfiring, or showing a check engine light with a lean code, a vacuum leak could be the cause.

When extra unmetered air gets into the engine through a cracked hose, leaking gasket, loose intake connection, or another leak point, it can throw off the air/fuel mixture and cause the engine to run lean.

At Roy’s Auto Sales & Service, we don’t guess. We check fuel trims to see how the engine is adjusting, then smoke test the system to help find leaks that may not be easy to see.

A lean code does not always mean a bad oxygen sensor — sometimes it’s the engine telling us there’s extra air getting in where it shouldn’t.

If your vehicle has a rough idle, poor acceleration, poor fuel economy, misfires, or lean codes like P0171 or P0174, it’s worth having it checked before it turns into a bigger issue.

Don’t Ignore Dim, Cloudy, or Flickering Headlights

Your headlights are one of the most important safety features on your vehicle, especially at night, in rain, fog, or snow.

Over time, headlight bulbs can get weak, burn out, or start flickering. Sometimes the problem is just a bulb, but it can also be caused by wiring, corrosion, a bad connector, moisture in the housing, or charging system issues.

Headlight housings can also develop a cloudy or yellow haze from sun exposure, road debris, salt, and age. When that happens, even good bulbs may not shine as bright as they should.

Signs your headlights need attention:

Dim headlights
One headlight out
Flickering lights
Yellow or cloudy lenses
Moisture inside the housing
Lights aimed too low or too high
Bulbs burning out often
Poor visibility at night

Tip: If your headlights look cloudy or your lights seem dim, don’t wait until you can’t see clearly. Clean, bright headlights help you see the road and help other drivers see you.
