Huge shoutout to Roadrunner Auto Glass for taking care of our Honda Odyssey back window.

Back glass jobs like this are not as simple as they look. Between the size, fitment, cleanup, the angles you're working at and getting everything sealed right, it takes experience to make it look clean and factory again.

They knocked it out and did a fantastic job. Much appreciated.

Progress on the ’69 Camaro:

Dynamat in the interior to cut down vibration and noise, and make the car feel solid once it’s back on the road. The drivetrain is going in soon, and this thing is getting closer to coming alive.

AJ might be young, but he’s one of the most important members of the team.

Illusion Auto has always been built around family, and he’s already putting in work on the shop truck.

We’re adding the small details, badges, and accessories to tie the truck into the full Illusion Auto look before the big reveal of our next steps. The custom black pearl paint and pinstriping already set the tone and now it’s about making everything else match the aesthetic.

Even the little details matter around here, and we still have quite a few more details to add.

Matte paint is not like regular paint.

This S63 is finished in Mercedes Graphite Gray Magno, and it needs to be treated differently. No automatic car washes. No harsh soaps. No wax. No buffing. Once a matte finish gets stained, polished, or scratched the wrong way, you can’t just shine it back out.

We didn’t paint this one, but anytime we work around a finish like this, the care level has to match the car.

We rewired a new head unit, upgraded the speakers to Crescendo Audio, and started cleaning up the audio enclosure so the electronics match the rest of the build.

After all the priming, blocking, guide coat, and final undercoat work, the ’72 Chevelle was finally ready for paint.

The customer wanted a special color, so we worked with the paint spectrophotometer to dial in the right formula for the match.

All the prep led to this and there's so much more to come.

'72 Chevelle:

Primer, guide coat, blocking, then back to primer and guide coat again.

The Chevelle was checked panel by panel to make sure everything was flat before paint. The guide coat doesn’t lie—high spots, low spots, and waves all show up before color ever goes on.

It may look repetitive, but this is the step that decides whether the final finish has the quality and consistency we want to achieve.

Industry Fact: Before modern body filler, technicians shaped bodywork with heated lead-and-tin solder.

The material was worked by hand to smooth welded seams, shape panels and create flowing custom lines. The process took serious skill and became especially popular on chopped and lowered custom Mercury coupes.

This is where the term "Lead Sled" came from.

Lead can still be uncovered during classic-car teardown, and it does not always mean an old repair. Manufacturers also used body solder at some factory seams and joints.

It’s an old-school craft that helped shape some of the most iconic customs ever built.
