Moderate flooding now forecast on the Llano River in Llano after isolated heavy rain in the Hill Country early Saturday.

LCRA plans to reopen floodgates at Wirtz & Starcke Dams later Saturday 10/3.

UPDATE (9:57 PM): The floodgates at Wirtz and Starcke dams are now closed.

There are currently no floodgates open at any LCRA dams, but that could change with significant additional rainfall or runoff.

UPDATE (1:45 PM): Floodgates are open at Wirtz and Starcke dams. Flows will be fast and water levels will be higher than usual downstream of the dams.

The floodwater will be moved downstream through the dams into Lake Travis, which has risen more than 2 feet over the last few days and is expected to continue to rise.

UPDATE (Saturday October 3, 10:26 AM): LCRA expects to re-open floodgates at Wirtz and Starcke dams Saturday afternoon. LCRA closed the floodgates Friday evening, but overnight rains in the Hill Country require additional floodgate operations today.

The floodwater will be moved downstream through the dams into Lake Travis, which has risen more than 2 feet over the last few days and is expected to continue to rise. The Hill Country has seen significant rainfall over the last week, with many areas receiving 3-5 inches of rain, and some areas receiving more than 8 inches. LCRA encourages the public to remain alert to local conditions and be prepared to take actions to protect people and property.

REMINDER: Wirtz Dam creates Lake LBJ and Starcke Dam creates Lake Marble Falls. The runoff will flow from Lake LBJ into Lake Marble Falls and then into Lake Travis.

RIVER FLOOD BREWING IN THE HILL COUNTRY

The Llano River is officially climbing in Junction due to 2-5"+ of rain since midnight. This guarantees that a swell of flood water will be heading downstream over the next couple of days, but we won't know just how big that swell is until the rain has moved out and we see a crest on the river gauges.

The Llano River moves through Mason and Llano counties before entering Lake LBJ. That water will need to be passed down to Lake Travis where it will be stored until Lake Travis reaches 100% capacity (currently 90% capacity) so it's possible we have floodgate operations along much of the highland lakes at some point this weekend. This is what I warned you about days ago.

Why is the Lake Austin drawdown happening in fall instead of winter?

Historically, lake drawdowns took place in the winter. But after Winter Storm Uri in 2021, we changed that approach to help ensure hydroelectric generators at dams along the Highland Lakes are fully available during the cold winter months.

During extreme winter weather, electricity demand can rise dramatically and other power sources can be affected. Keeping the lakes at normal operating levels helps ensure LCRA can generate hydropower if needed to support grid reliability - helping keep power available for Texas homes, businesses and essential services.

That’s why planned lake drawdowns now take place in the fall.

At the request of the City of Austin, we will draw down Lake Austin from Oct. 12 through Nov. 30, 2026, to allow shoreline property owners and City departments to perform needed maintenance.

PLANNED LAKE LOWERING ALERT
At the City of Austin Government's request, LCRA plans to temporarily lower Lake Austin this fall to give property owners time to repair shoreline structures, dredge boat slips, remove debris and manage nuisance vegetation.

📅 Starting Oct. 12 the lake will be lowered up to 1 foot per day - up to 10 feet total
🚤 The City plans to close public boat ramps along Lake Austin and prohibit swimming at Emma Long Metropolitan Park during the drawdown
💧 LCRA plans to refill the lake Nov. 24-30
