When I visited the 9-11 Memorial at the Pentagon, I was moved to tears. I couldn't initially determine why some of the memorials faced the building, while others faced out.
The designers based that design choice on this:
"Each Memorial Unit is also specifically positioned in the Memorial to distinguish victims who were in the Pentagon from those who were onboard American Airlines Flight 77. At the 125 Memorial Units honoring the victims of the Pentagon, visitors see the victim’s name and the Pentagon in the same view. At the Memorial Units honoring the 59 lives lost on Flight 77, the visitor sees the victim’s name and the direction of the plane’s approach in the same view."
It is a sacred place, and will both move and change you. If you haven't had a chance to visit, make an effort to do so or view it online. We as a nation cannot forget that day, or how we all came together as ONE nation, without caring about race, gender, economic differences. We need to do that again.
Gardner's Garage would like to pay tribute to all of those who tried to stop the attacks, ran into the fire at the Pentagon, ran up the stairs at the towers, and to the families of the fallen.
