They left for a routine mission. They came back to find the furniture rearranged and the planet on fire.

Imagine it. Dinosaurs ruled Earth for about 165 million years. We have been doing this for roughly 300,000. If their reign were a full day, ours would be the last three minutes before midnight. They had more time to build a civilization than we have had to invent farming.

So why didn't they? That is a real scientific question, and it has a name: the Silurian hypothesis. Two scientists, one from NASA and one from Rochester, seriously asked whether we could even detect an industrial civilization that existed millions of years ago. Their unsettling conclusion is that almost nothing would survive. Cities crumble to nothing in a few tens of thousands of years. Bones fossilize only by freak accident. After 100 million years, the only evidence left of us might be a strange chemical smudge in a rock layer.

We would not find their skyscrapers. We would find a stripe of odd isotopes and probably argue about what caused it.

Then look out that window with them. In their absence, one branch of small scurrying mammals that used to hide from them inherited everything, learned to make fire, split the atom, and lit up the entire night side of the planet in a few thousand years.

The monkey did touch things. The monkey touched everything.

And here is the twist that always lands. The dinosaurs never actually left. Birds are dinosaurs, direct descendants of the same lineage. There are roughly 50 billion of them alive right now. The pigeon on your windowsill is a surviving theropod watching the mammals run the place.

They ruled for 165 million years and were erased in an afternoon by a rock they never saw coming. We have been in charge for a blink and already have the power to do it to ourselves.

If they came back tomorrow, what do you think would horrify them most about what we did with the place?
