For all your instrument cluster needs give us a shout at United Speedometer & Classics @ 713-690-1230. Remember, we’ve been added it since 1983.

The complaint on this 2020 GMC Terrain was that the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp), commonly referred to as the “Check Engine” light, was not functioning properly. With fewer than 40,000 miles on the vehicle, we inspected the instrument cluster and found something we unfortunately encounter far too often.

Someone had improperly jumped the MIL circuit to the oil-pressure warning-light circuit. To an untrained eye, this can make the system appear to function normally. During the initial ignition cycle, the Check Engine light illuminates as it should. Once the engine starts and oil pressure builds, the oil-pressure warning light goes out—and because the two circuits have been improperly connected, the MIL goes out at the same time.

This type of modification can prevent the vehicle from properly displaying a Check Engine warning and can result in the vehicle failing a state inspection or, more importantly, concealing an existing problem from an unsuspecting buyer.

This is exactly why we refer to this kind of work as the work of “pirates and scam artists.” When purchasing a used vehicle, don’t assume that everything is functioning properly simply because the warning lights appear to work.

If you have any doubts about a vehicle you’re considering purchasing, have it professionally inspected before you buy it. A proper inspection can uncover problems that aren’t obvious to the average buyer—and potentially save you thousands of dollars and a lot of headaches.

Buyer beware. Protect yourself and have that used vehicle checked out by a qualified professional.

As we mentioned before we do work on Classic European Cars as well. This SL380 is a Beautiful hard top convertible that we just did the European Bumper Conversion on the front and rear. European spec bumpers pull the bumpers closer to the body and has more chrome going around the the side then the American spec bumpers. It really is a great upgrade to any SL380/560. Plus all this beauty and no arm pit hair!

We often get asked if we can work on European classic as well as American and short answer is yes! We love the American classics but we also have a soft spot for the European as well.
Here our tech is installing a conversion European Bumper set on a 1982 SL380, that pulls the bumpers in tighter to the body, we did just start on the car, as Monday starts a new week we should have it done with more pictures.
