Too-dark window tint can cost you more than you planned. In Texas, here’s the plain-language guide for Houston drivers:
• Windshield: Tint is allowed only above the AS-1 line, or within the top five inches if there is no line. The combined glass and film must allow at least 25% visible light transmission (VLT).
• Front side windows: Must allow at least 25% VLT when measured with the original glass.
• Rear side windows: Texas law does not restrict tint darkness.
• Rear window: No tint restriction if your vehicle has outside mirrors that provide a view of the road at least 200 feet behind you. Without those mirrors, the 25% VLT minimum applies.
Remember: the lower the VLT number, the darker the tint. Front windows measuring below 25% can fail Texas inspection and may lead to a traffic stop or citation.
The windshield is the only thing between you and the road, so safety and clear visibility matter. Before we install window tint, Affordable Auto Glass walks you through the Texas legal limit for your vehicle. That way, you don’t end up paying to have tint removed later.
