Today's vehicles are monitored by an on board computer system and when the computer reads a malfunction, it will display the 'check engine' notification light on the drivers instrument panel. A number of things could prompt the vehicle computer to display this warning light, from a simple oversight to replace the fuel filler cap, to a more serious issue.

Although vehicles in Texas are no longer displaying a vehicle inspection certificate on the windshield, in order to renew your registration annually, a safety and emissions inspection is still required. The documents proving that your vehicle has performed at acceptable levels must be presented to the clerk in person or by mail. Most of the vehicles on the road today have a serpentine belt system which is a single belt that drives all of your components instead of the old "V-belt" system which had an individual belt for each component. The serpentine system is nice and tidy, and requires only one belt, however, that belt must be maintained. Should that single belt break, all of the components on your vehicle stop working, thus leaving you stranded. It is recommended that a preventative cooling system maintenance check be performed at least once every two years. This inspection is designed to identify areas that need attention, and consists of:
1 - a visual inspection of all cooling system components, including belts and hoses
2 - a radiator cap pressure test to check for the recommended system pressure level
3 - a thermostat check for proper opening and closing
4 - a pressure test to identify any external leaks to the cooling system parts; including the radiator, water pump, engine coolant passages, radiator and heater hoses and heater core
5 - an internal leak test to check for combustion gas leakage into the cooling system
6 - an engine cooling fan test for proper operation

On Saturday, March 4, folks from all over Texas will be participating in the world’s longest river cleanup. We will be picking up trash along most of the San Marcos River (approximately 60 miles). The City of San Marcos will hold their portion of the cleanup, walking the banks of the watershed and the sections of the river within the city limits.
