The following counties will require emissions testing even after mandatory inspections end in 2025: Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris and Montgomery counties; Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall and Tarrant counties; Travis and Williamson counties; and El Paso County. Bexar County will begin requiring emissions tests in 2026.

Commercial vehicles will still be subject to the inspection requirement as usual.

Texas lawmakers passed House Bill 3297 earlier this month, eliminating inspections for vehicles in all but 17 Texas counties.

What Does the Check Engine Light Look Like, and What Does It Mean? It can be as simple as a loose gas cap—or a serious engine problem.

Call it the most misunderstood indicator on your dashboard: The check engine light can mean anything from a loose gas cap to a seriously misfiring engine. Ignore that warning and you could end up with a hefty expense pretty fast.

No matter how you look at it, the check engine light — more formally known as the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) — should be taken seriously. It is a signal from the car's engine computer that something is wrong.

Check engine lights come in orange, yellow, or amber, and if it is flashing, it indicates a more serious problem, such as a misfire that can quickly overheat the catalytic converter. These emissions devices operate at high temperatures to cut emissions but can pose a fire hazard if faulty.

Before 1996, carmakers had their own engine diagnostic systems, primarily to ensure their cars were compliant with EPA pollution control requirements. When the automotive industry dove headlong into safety, they instituted the check engine light, for the health of you and your car.
Here are some of the most common reasons why your check engine light could be warning you of potential danger to the health of your vehicle.
1. Catalytic converter replacement
2. Oxygen sensor(s) are faulty
3. Ignition coil(s) and spark plug(s) need maintenance
4. Replace your mass airflow sensor
5. Tighten or replace a loose or missing fuel cap.
6. Evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge control valve
7. Replace your ignition coil(s)
8. Fuel injector(s) are clogged
9. Thermostat is faulty
10. Powertrain control module (PCM) needs replacing or reprogramming

DPS Issues Reminders for Drivers, Offers Resources Ahead of New School Year. Give students extra room and don’t assume they are paying attention to your vehicle. Students are often distracted by mobile devices, listening to electronic devices, or by other students, and they may not be paying attention to their surroundings. Be careful around railroad crossings. School buses are legally required to stop at them.

Know the laws regarding school buses. According to Texas law, if a bus has alternating flashing red signals visible from the front or rear, drivers MUST stop before reaching the bus. Drivers can only proceed if the flashing lights are no longer activated, the driver signals you to proceed or the bus has resumed driving.

Approaching drivers do NOT have to stop for a school bus that is operating a visual signal if the road is separated by a physical barrier or an intervening space. If a highway is only divided by a left-turn lane, it is not considered divided, and drivers must stop for school buses.

Drivers who illegally pass a school bus face fines of up to $1,250 for the first offense.
