Do I need an emissions inspection this year?

We've had quite a few customers ask this question recently, especially owners of newer 2025 and 2026 vehicles.

Many Texas drivers are surprised to learn that some vehicles no longer require emissions testing based on age, fuel type, or vehicle classification. We're also seeing some 2026 vehicles that cannot currently communicate with Texas inspection equipment due to software updates that are still being rolled out.

A customer brought their Toyota 4Runner to us after noticing a strong burning smell while driving around Houston.

After inspection, one front brake rotor measured over 550 degrees Fahrenheit due to a seized brake caliper.

Once we removed the calipers, we found all four pistons on the left side had seized internally, while the opposite side was also beginning to fail. We replaced both front calipers, brake pads, rotors, and completed a brake fluid bleed to restore safe braking performance.

Signs of a sticking brake caliper can include:
• Burning smells
• Vehicle pulling while driving
• Brake vibration
• One wheel getting extremely hot
• Uneven brake pad wear

Even brand-new parts can fail.

During this vehicle’s A/C repair, we discovered a leaking service valve straight out of the box. After correcting that issue and continuing system testing, we then found a second leak at the newly installed expansion valve.

Both components were installed correctly using new seals and proper procedures — the parts themselves were defective.

This is why thorough pressure testing, evacuation procedures, and final leak checks matter. At Chimney Rock Car Care, every repair is verified before the vehicle goes back to the customer.

Final result: leak-free operation and 40°F vent temp. ❄️

This is what a failed air suspension strut looks like next to a new one.

The customer came in after noticing the rear of the vehicle felt unstable and unpredictable when hitting bumps on the freeway. During our inspection, we found the air suspension system had failed.

Suspension problems don’t always start with a warning light. Sometimes the first signs are:
• bouncing excessively over bumps
• leaning or sagging
• rough ride quality
• unstable handling on the freeway

Houston roads and heat are tough on suspension systems, especially on vehicles with air ride suspension.

If your vehicle doesn’t feel right, let our team take a look before a minor issue turns into a much larger repair.

or if the check engine light just decided to take the day off 😅

We see this more than you’d think.

Just because the light turns off doesn’t mean the problem is gone—it usually means it hasn’t gotten bad enough yet.

If your check engine light has been on (even if it comes and goes), it’s worth getting it checked before it turns into something bigger.
