You call us tow truck drivers. You call us in your time of need. You call us because you have nowhere else to turn. Whether you car wonโ€™t start or you locked your keys inside or you break down you call us in a panic. At that moment we are your concern, the only person you want to be there for you. We come fix you up and then just that quick we are but a distant memory. Let me take a minute of your time to tell you what we are.

We are not tow truck drivers, we are towing operators. We go through extensive training for the services that we perform. You think that our day consists of going from car to car to car towing breakdowns, jumping batteries, and unlocking doors. Yes that is PART of it, but there is much more than that.
Being a towing operator is a lifestyle, not a job. That means there is no 9-5, no making plans for a dinner date or a last minute movie. We come to work and we go home at the end of our shift SOMETIMES. Other times we stay for double or triple shifts. We get called in all hours of the night whether just getting home from a shift or at 1am for accidents or massive recovery operations that take 10-15 hours or more to complete at times. We see things that most people would never ever want to see. We go through emotional and stressful situations constantly. We donโ€™t get 3 meals a day. Sometimes we are lucky if we eat once a day. We work in the harshest of conditions from sweltering heat to bitter cold, In the sun, mud, slush, snow and pouring rain. We risk our lives on the sides of highways with traffic blowing by us at 70-80 miles per hour everyday. And we know that each time we step out of our truck itโ€™s a gamble. One towing operator is killed every 6 days in this profession. Thatโ€™s an average of one operator per week! If you see flashing lights on the side of the road slow down, move over if you can and give us room. Did you know there is a monument is Tennessee called the wall of the fallen strictly dedicated to towing operators? Yes you may see different company names on the sides of trucks but we are a brotherhood, a family. We help each other. When we see another operator on the side of the road we pull over behind them to offer protection for them to give them a better chance of going home to their loved ones that day. Weather we personally know them or not we do it.
So the next time you call for a tow truck or a service truck remember these things. Say thank you, be polite and know that we WILL get you taken care of and back home to your loved ones.
We do this because we have a passion to help people. We are towing operators.

Be safe out there.

A customer asked me how much I would charge to tow his Corvette stuck in park and broken ignition switch to the dealer.
My reply: $325.00.
His reply: WOW, just to tow it 10 miles? Why so much?
My reply: Well, this estimate also includes for the non productive factors.
He questioned: What is nonproductive factors?"
My reply: Just the usual things like taxes, tow truck insurance, shop rent, fuel etc, etc.
I asked: How much do you think it should cost?
He responded matter-of-factly: Around $115 at the most... It's just going 10 miles and a fairly simple job right?
I calmly said: Okay sir, for $115 I invite you to do it yourself.
He said: But.... I don't know how to.
I replied: Okay, for $50 I'll teach you. So besides saving you $275, you'll get the knowledge for the next time.
It seemed right to him and he agreed.
I continued: To get started you will need a $170,000 tow truck with insurance @ $50,000 a year and registration fees of $1200 for the first year, $5,000 worth of equipment, an office, a dispatcher, a shop to fix and maintain your truck, permits, fuel etc...
He said: But I don't have all this type of equipment and I can't afford to buy all of these things just to tow my Corvette.
I offered: Okay then, for an additional $100 I'll rent my equipment to you, but I have to drive the truck. You will still save a few bucks.
Okay, he says.
I replied: So on Tuesday I will be available to start teaching you. There are very specific techniques and skills you will have to learn to load this car with no damage being done.
He said: But I can't on Tuesday I only have time today.
I said: I'm sorry sir, but Tuesday is the only day this week that I will be available to teach and rent you my equipment. The rest of the week is already scheduled for other customers.
He exclaimed frustrated: Damn! That means I gotta rearrange my schedule and sacrifice my whole Tuesday?!
I said: That is correct sir!
Also, loading of the Corvette will take place Tuesday morning around 6am. After the tow is complete, all equipment and tools need to be cleaned and reloaded back on to the tow truck neat and organized.
He asked in disbelief: At 6am???
Nope! Way too early for me! So much work just to tow a car?
You know what, I've been doing some serious thinking and I've decided that it would be best if you just went ahead and did the job for me for $325. It seems fair now and I'd rather it be done right by true professionals.
