"A little bit of kindness can go a long way" is more than just a motto for this week's Hometown Hero—it is a way of life for Debbie Harshaw who was nominated by Christa McCullough.

Mrs. Harshaw is a familiar and beloved face in the Holton community. A retired teacher from Holton High School, she spent 33 years inspiring students through Senior College English and Creative Writing classes. Even after retirement, her passion for education and mentoring young people continued as a substitute teacher at USD 336 Holton Elementary School.

Throughout her career, Debbie recognized that some of life's most important lessons extend beyond academics. She saw a growing need for character-building opportunities and social-emotional learning experiences that would help young people develop empathy, compassion, and a sense of community responsibility.

Determined to make a difference, Debbie founded The Kindness Krew, a youth organization dedicated to spreading kindness throughout Jackson County. What started as a simple idea has grown into an incredible movement, with more than 70 members in grades 3 through 5, along with 10 teenage helpers and 10 adult supervisors.

Rather than creating entirely new events, Debbie found meaningful ways for The Kindness Krew to support and enhance existing community efforts. Members volunteer at local events, spend time serving at the Stronger Together Run for Mental Health, the senior center, assist veterans, support the humane society, and look for opportunities to brighten someone's day wherever they go.

The Kindness Krew will also host a table every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Banner Creek Science Center, where members will share their message of kindness and community with visitors.

Debbie's vision has resonated throughout the area, inspiring both young people and adults to become more involved in acts of service. She is grateful for the many businesses, organizations, and community members who have rallied behind the mission and helped make The Kindness Krew a success.

Through decades of teaching, mentoring, and now leading a growing movement centered on kindness, Debbie Harshaw continues to leave a lasting impact on the lives of countless young people and community members. Her dedication to making Jackson County a more caring and compassionate place is what makes her this week's Hometown Hero.

Congratulations, Debbie Harshaw, and thank you for showing us all that a little kindness truly can go a long way.

For more than two decades, if you stopped by the Highland Lions Club Ball Stand during summer ball season, chances are you were greeted by the smell of David Diveley’s famous tenderloins and someone working tirelessly behind the counter making sure everyone was taken care of.

After 20+ years, David is officially stepping away from running the Lions Club Ball Stand — and it’s hard to put into words what that means to the Highland community.

While many know him as the longtime owner of Highland Hardware Inc. since 1991, countless families know him as the man who dedicated endless summer evenings, weekends, and volunteer hours to helping make Highland ballgames special. Even while running a business, David always found time to serve his community. David also proudly served and retired after 20 years in the United States Air Force, continuing a lifetime dedicated to service both at home and for his country.

He would quickly credit fellow Lions Club members for helping along the way, but there is no question that David’s leadership and commitment helped build the ball stand into one of the best in Northeast Kansas.

To generations of kids, parents, coaches, and fans, the ball stand became more than just a place to grab food. It became part of the tradition and community spirit that makes Highland special.

People like David are the reason small towns stay strong — quietly making life better for everyone around them.

David was proudly nominated as a Hometown Hero by his son, Tyler.

Thank you, David, for everything you’ve done for Highland. Your impact will last far beyond any ball season, and your legendary tenderloins will never be forgotten.
