From farming to volunteering, Harvey Fasse has spent his life putting down roots and lending a helping hand wherever he’s needed.

Harvey hails from Wakefield, Kansas, but eventually settled on a farm outside of Effingham, where he also helped with his wife Nancy’s family farm, Hamon Seed Farms in Valley Falls. After retiring from farming and moving into town, Harvey found even more ways to give back to his community.

For the past six years, Harvey has been a member of the Atchison Train Club - North East Kansas Railroaders, after meeting organization president Ronnie Myer. Harvey serves as First Vice President and is the head engineer for the little train that runs on weekends from April through October in Atchison. The Railroaders also bring some Halloween fun to the tracks each October with their Haunted Train, which returns October 23–24 this year.

Harvey is also an active member of the Effingham, Kansas Lion's Club, helping work the gates at Tiger home games, hosting the club’s annual gun show in January and selling tickets for the bouncy houses at the Atchison County Fair. The club’s fundraising stays right here at home, helping local families and community members when they need a little extra assistance.

For the past eight years, Harvey has volunteered with Second Harvest Community Food Bank, helping with food distributions at the blue building and delivering boxes to those who aren’t able to make it into town. On Mondays and Wednesdays, Harvey and Nancy deliver Meals on Wheels through Project Concern, Inc., bringing meals—and often a friendly visit—to local residents.

Harvey is also an active member of Effingham Union Church, where he helps mow the church lawn. And if there’s another lawn around town that needs a trim, chances are Harvey is willing to help there, too.

But perhaps what says the most about Harvey is the way he quietly shows up for people. He takes great pride in donating his time to transport community members to doctor appointments, therapy and treatments—making sure people have a way to get where they need to go.

Harvey doesn’t volunteer for recognition. He simply believes in helping his neighbors and being there when someone needs a hand. Whether he’s behind the wheel, behind the controls of the train, mowing a lawn, delivering a meal or lending a listening ear, Harvey’s kindness is evident in everything he does.

Harvey Fasse is a true Hometown Hero—proof that sometimes the biggest impact comes from simply being a good neighbor and a kind person.

Some people become part of a community because of the work they do. Others become part of it because of the way they make people feel. Jim Rupe is one of those special people.

Nominated by Megan Whitmore, Jim is a familiar and much-loved face around Hiawatha. For the past 10.5 years, he has served Hiawatha Public Schools-USD 415 as a crossing guard near the middle school, helping students and citizens safely navigate the First Street crossing.

But Jim does more than help people cross the street. He makes people feel seen.

Jim knows everyone. He waves at everyone. And he might even call you by name as you drive by. That big smile and happy wave have become part of the rhythm of life in Hiawatha — and for many, seeing Jim is one of the best parts of the day.

And somewhere along the way, something special happened: people started looking for Jim, too.

They look for his smile. They watch for his wave. They notice when he's there — and they notice when he's not.

For 10.5 years, Jim has been doing more than helping people safely cross First Street. He's been creating connections, spreading joy and reminding us how much a simple smile, a wave, and a kind heart can mean.

Thank you, Jim, for showing up every day and making a little brighter. We are lucky to have you.

Loretta Edelman Buser doesn’t do all she does for recognition—but today, she’s being recognized as a Hometown Hero thanks to her nominator, Beth Kroll.

Mrs. Buser has dedicated 21 years to Sabetha Middle School, serving as a para for 15 years before spending the past six years at the front desk, where she continues to serve students and staff daily. Her genuine care for the students and the relationships she has built with them over the years have made her a special part of the Middle School family.

But her Bluejay spirit doesn’t stop when the school doors close. Mrs. Buser has served as President of the Sabetha High School Booster Club and has also served on the Project Prom Board.

And when summer rolls around, you’ll find her keeping the community cool as she runs the Sabetha Aquatic Center.

For more than two decades, Loretta has been giving her time, energy and heart to the Sabetha community—and that kind of dedication deserves to be celebrated.
