🇨🇦⛵ Canadians have carried one of the country’s most famous ships in their pockets for generations.

Bluenose was launched in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, in 1921.

That same year, the working fishing schooner won the International Fishermen’s Trophy.

It went on to successfully defend its title and became known as the “Queen of the North Atlantic.”

The Royal Canadian Mint says no challenger wrested that championship away over nearly two decades of racing.

Then, in 1937, Bluenose inspired the sailing ship placed on Canada’s 10-cent coin.

A Nova Scotia fishing boat became a racing champion.

Then it became a national symbol.

🇨🇦🚤 On September 9, 1919, an experimental craft on Nova Scotia’s Bras d’Or Lake made world history.

It was called the HD-4.

Alexander Graham Bell and engineer Frederick “Casey” Baldwin had been experimenting with hydrofoils — boats designed to rise above the water on submerged wings as their speed increased.

On that day, the HD-4 reached approximately 114 kilometres per hour.

It set a world marine speed record.

The machine looked radically different from conventional boats of the period.

Its hydrofoils reduced contact with the water, allowing the craft to travel at extraordinary speed.

Bell is famous around the world for the telephone.

But at his Nova Scotia home, he and his team also experimented with aviation and high-speed marine technology.

Exactly 107 years ago today, one of those Canadian experiments became the fastest boat in the world.
