When you expect a great paint job with a showroom finish with no personal time on a buffer or block remember how many man hours you eat up for $4500.00. Employees at McDonalds now make 600-700 a week. Now, body and paint guys that are beginners want 25-30 and hour minimum. Thats about 1200 a week per man, before matching social security and benefits. Now tack on shop costs, insurance, 1200-2000 in paint, primer, filler, and clearcoat, and how fast would you eat up 2500 in labor while making any profit. 5 days is what 4500 buys for 1 man, or 2.5 days for 2 men.
Now, the answer everyone is looking for. What's the difference in a painted car that looks ok and a show car, about 15-20 thousand dollars in elbow grease. 4500 dollars buys you the chance to have the car of your dreams for about 4 weeks of your personal time sanding with 1000 grit, 1500, 2000, 2500 by hand, then 2500, 3000, 4000, 5000, up to 8000 with a DA and trizac pads, then a wool pad buff and polish. Its the same paint job, it just needs the finish.
Now, body work is also key in your job. Prep it first at home if economy is your goal. Youtube will teach you some. Realistic expectations will make you a happy camper in the long run. If you want to look good from the door at Walmart to the first handicap space, 4500 will set you up pretty good.
