I haven't posted in a while and I just figured out how to post on my computer. I got rid of my cell phone last December and I'm still figuring out life without one. This was an interesting job. The bathroom previously had a neo angle jacuzzi tub with tiled shower walls. It must have been leaking around the tub deck for years and its amazing how little damage showed in the basement. The tub fl**ge wall, the regular wall, subfloor and sill plate were all completely rotted. The rot even expanded under the wet wall into the laundry area. I came up with a clever way to fix all this that involved minimal demo. We still had to build temp walls because you can see the trusses spanned so far they had to semi support points. One of those points was on the rotted wall. Good problem solving made this very profitable for the business and the end result of all the rest of the work was appealing too. I’m so behind on posting but here is a bathroom from this spring. This is for a really special client of mind that has great vision. I installed the shower, vanity, all the fixtures. The vanity top was a cement mold done by another company. All the fixtures and tile were from Fireclay Tile

I’ve been in business officially a full 5 years. I’ve built a life for myself I’m very happy with. I have a wonderful wife. I have 2 children and a 3rd on the way. I’m nearly debt free and the amount of money required to live is not a lot. Meaning, I don’t work that much if I don’t want to. I spend time with my children. A lot of time. How did I get here? A long journey of good decision making followed up by grit and lonliness. I’m not rich in a monetary sense, but I can take 3 weeks off without any requests, concerns about money, or burning a years vacation. I’m fully aware what I’ve accomplished in the landscape of great achievements doesn’t even register on the Richter scale, but my goal was never to do that. I could wax poetically about my business or life advice but what I did I did for freedom, not social status, or material goods and I accomplished it. If you wanna talk message me. I love talking about the career life overlap but I’m not going to impose myself. This post is a sort of self congratulatory engagement that I’m still here. And above all “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Nothing crazy but a bit of a back breaker. To some people’s horror my client wanted to pull up part of their maple hardwood floor and replace it with tile. Getting the height right for flush, maple inlay, border translations was the most thought. Logistically a little difficult. some days were shorter and some really long. To my clients defense they have radiant heat in the floor, so the maple hardwoods weren’t installed with the typical fasteners and squeaked really bad in the summer. They are also due for a refinish and not as maintainable as they were 25 years ago.

Not the greatest photos. No befores but a small bathroom wrapped up last week. Color washed the very popular sage green. We changed the door from a regular swing to a pocket door. Pocket door remodels are a lot of work and quite pricey so most people don’t opt to do it but we did here. 4 panel shower. I need to charge more for panel showers because they involve about the same prep to do tile. Super frustrating because this is my 2nd shower base that has come warped. This causes a lot of heads aches and added work. Thankfully this time is was on the back wall and now the shower door side. It’s getting difficult to recommend products when it seems there are no options for guaranteed quality. This was a Kohler base I’ve installed a lot and there technical team couldn’t even understand the issue. They thought I was just out of level and couldn’t even understand what I meant by warped. Either way. On to the next.

This bathroom was a great feather in the cap. It went super smooth until the end where I had a ton of supplier issues. Cabinets built to the wrong size, quartz never kicked off, the partial order of quartz received, then quartz milled down too much, then not enough. It was so frustrating but my client left me a good review because they weren’t my mistakes and I stuck it out eating the cost of time wasted with a good attitude. My most expensive bathroom to date. So much coordination goes into something like this. Lots of features. Heated floor, quartz sill by the freestanding tub, sill to ceiling glass walls, floor mounted fixtures, under vanity lighting. Really happy to be hired for a more ambitious project. Thanks for looking!

Finished up this project last week. Did a couple small projects between while waiting for inspections. Another great easy to work with client. I’m really lucky that way it seems. I know I haven’t been posting updates on my stories. I’m a bit tired of social media and debating getting a dumb phone and being done with it. It was nice to do a simple bathroom. Not serious problem solving and just able to go thru the motions and listen to music. Thanks for looking!

This was a really cool one and a great example of how you grow your business. Meaning, I was doing some new things for this job I and I underbid some of the work. However, I firmly believe in order to earn work for good money, you have to do that work at some point for free or drastically less money. Call it karma I don’t know but it happens to me a lot. The vanity was live edge wood and we in mortised a slot along the sides and back to sit on a ledger, fastened it together, then pocket hole fastened thru the shiplap into pre planned studs. There was so much crap in this wall making the plumbing nice in an open setting with wall mounted faucets was a real challenge. I also installed a new larger window. This entails a lot more work than what it seems. New shower, shiplap, and floating shelves for a solid accent. Oh and my son helped. Thanks for looking!
