ZERO, NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE CAMBER
ZERO CAMBER
Zero camber means that the wheels are perfectly vertical, with no tilt either inward or outward. The top of the wheel is directly above the bottom of the wheel when viewed from the front or rear of the vehicle.
Benefits: Zero camber provides even tire wear, maximizing tire lifespan. It ensures a stable and predictable handling experience in a straight line, making it ideal for everyday driving conditions.
Drawbacks: While zero camber offers balanced tire wear and stability, it may not provide the optimal grip during aggressive cornering compared to negative camber setups. It represents a compromise between performance and tire longevity.
NEGATIVE CAMBER
Negative camber occurs when the top of the wheels tilt inward relative to the carโs body. This means the tops of the wheels are closer together than the bottoms when viewed from the front or rear of the vehicle.
Benefits: Negative camber improves cornering performance. During a turn, the tireโs contact patch increases, providing better grip and handling. This is why many sports cars and race cars use negative camber.
Drawbacks: Excessive negative camber can lead to uneven tire wear (more wear on the inner edges) and can reduce straight-line stability and tire lifespan. It can also make the ride less comfortable due to the increased sensitivity to road imperfections.
POSITIVE CAMBER
Positive camber occurs when the top of the wheels tilt outward relative to the carโs body. This means the bottoms of the wheels are closer together than the tops when viewed from the front or rear of the vehicle.
Benefits: Positive camber can improve the stability of a vehicle, particularly in off-road situations where the surface is uneven. It can help in reducing the steering effort and can provide better handling in certain conditions.
Drawbacks: On regular roads, positive camber can cause uneven tire wear (more wear on the outer edges) and reduce the overall grip, especially during cornering. This setup is generally less common in modern passenger cars.
