After ensuring our customers vessel was intact yesterday (and did not even have a scratch) in Fort Myers, we celebrated briefly but our attention quickly shifted to the residents of Everglades City and Chokoloskee. The road just opened into town yesterday around 4pm and we were able to drive in around 6 to deliver gasoline and water to some of the residents. I grew up fishing this area with my father and have very fond memories of the beautiful environment and it's colorful natives, and felt strongly that I wanted to organize some relief for them.
We learned quite a bit with the hurricane Matthew relief effort last year to the Bahamas: here are the items that will really keep people going in the coming weeks and 2nd and 3rd stages of disaster recovery:
Tents, screened enclosures, cots, air mattresses, clothes, diapers, paper towels, toilet paper, extension cords, lanterns, fans, generators.
There will be tons of water and food donations (and we already saw 50pallets of water at the fire station distribution center) but these items above will help with the next stage of the disaster and you can be ahead of the curve and really have your efforts hit the mark. This is a triage situation for the first couple of days but if people don't have ways to cook their food, get good rest, and stay out of the bugs, they will develop illness and it will spread.
I'm planning on returning with more relief to this area as soon as tomorrow and I sincerely hope you will contact me today and help organize with your friends/family/neighbors to collect some of these items to help the people suffering from Hurricane Irma at ground zero Everglades City and Chokoloskee.
