Story Time Gather around!
On August 10th 2009 BigNastyMotorsports LLC was incorporated. With the help of my father in guidance I set out to open a business in a barn at our home that we converted to a shop, I was 22 years old and had a lot to learn but he was there to guide me. He and his father had ran several successful gas station/ repair shops in the st.Louis area (Sharps Shell) since the early 50s.
I was going to build race cars and do restorations. I had one job lined up and an add on Craigslist, a strong work ethic and an eagerness to learn. Boy we did some crazy jobs one I remember was trying to fix an oil leak on a 90s diesel dually that I way under bid and under estimated 🤦♂️ after finally getting it fixed and collecting my $500 two days later I get a phone call that they are broke down in toys r us parking lot in south county and it’s puking oil so me and dad grab our tools and head up there in the snow. I’m laying under the truck repairing the issue crying, cussing and contemplating why I’m doing this. When my dad says son your doing this because you want to build a good name that stands behind your work, and one day you will be able to pick and choose what jobs you want to take on! Fast forward 4 years I’m now married with a beautiful baby boy, I’ve learned dozens of lessons in life and business clawing and scraping every inch of the way. I’m sitting in my office late one night going through bills and invoices trying to determine if I can keep this up, when I here the squeaking brakes of my dads gator. In he comes and sits at the counter and says I seen the lights on what you doing son. I said I’m just contemplating pops! He says 5 years kid give it 5 years at that point you can look at it and determine either to go wide open or shut it down but remember if the hand has gang green we cut it off and we don’t keep the thumb because it had good intentions. That year I focused on tracking my costs, Labor, materials, parts, and made sure I was getting paid what needed to be paid for and we started making money! I had a couple good guys helping me in the shop including my dad, and my painter who is still with me today! The year is now 2014 we are rolling along pretty well we started doing some insurance repair to help with cash flow in between restorations. My dad works with me everyday and one day he is under a car on the ground and I’m down there messin with him🤷♂️ anyone who knows me or my dad I’m quite a bit larger than him lol so I’m poking his side and ticklin him while he can’t defend him self 😂. The next day he says you got me peein blood as***le! Well that continues for a couple days until he goes to the doctor, long story short he has Kidney cancer, has surgery, and passes away on November 13 2014! I’m Lost 😞 I lay off my guys I throttle back and I’m trying to process, I’m hurt, I’m lonely and I don’t know how to care for myself or my family. A week or two go by and I’m driving down Z hwy just blank! when I hear a voice behind me! What are doing son I told you at 5 years you either Gas it up or shut it down, please don’t make me the reason you quit! I almost ran off the road! I went home that night I told my wife to quit here job and we were going to do this together! Go ahead dry your eyes I’ll wait……
Fast forward we start hammering on the collision market learning together perfecting our name and pushing out quality work and helping our customers navigate insurance claims to get there vehicles repaired correctly. The year is now 2019 and we have out grown our small shop and almost plateaued on the revenue. Then I remember my dad telling me Drive by traffic is 30% of your business! We start looking around for a building and wouldn’t you know it there is a perfect shop sitting empty in our home town of Hillsboro Mo. We call and go look at it, it’s a little small but we can make it work. We Meet with Bill and sign a lease purchase agreement we got the building! The year is now 2020 and like my dad said drive by traffic doubled our business, And then…. COVID! It completely halted everything and everyone what are we going to do now! Well we go back to what we know and start taking on any and every job to meet our demands wondering what will happen after Covid is over will we be able to stay open, was this a mistake, no one is driving no one needs repairs!!! Well just as fast as it started the clouds parted and it was gone then we returned to some sort of normal and just like before Covid we fired right back off taking on new customers every day building a name and a business to be proud of! Fast forward to 2026! Im glad you stayed with me I know this was a lot to read! 8/10/2026 marks 17years since we opened our doors and don’t plan on going anywhere anytime soon! We try and learn and improve our business everyday and we are here to help serve our community!
