🚗 How dark is TOO dark? Oregon law allows window tint, but only within certain limits.
⚠️Why does this matter?
Window tint that is too dark can make it harder to see when driving—especially during our darker, low-light months in the Pacific Northwest. It can also create safety concerns during traffic stops when deputies cannot see inside the vehicle.
🚓 While window tint is allowed in Oregon, there are specific rules drivers must follow to stay in compliance with Oregon law.
Some key takeaways include:
✅ No tint on the front windshield that extends further than six inches from the roof
✅ Tint on the driver and passenger front windows must allow 35% light transmittance or more
✅ No red, gold, yellow, or mirrored tints are permitted
✅ The window tint installer must provide a certificate of compliance
On Tuesday, March 10, a multi-agency traffic safety team conducted a mission in Washington County to educate drivers about window tint laws. During the mission, traffic units stopped 96 vehicles for violations, including 65 for illegal window tint.
If you’re unsure whether your vehicle is compliant, contact a certified installer to check your window tint. Oregon law provides a remedy for drivers cited for illegal tint, provided the issue is corrected.
A quick check now can help you avoid a safety issue or a citation later.
