On March 8, 1970, Don Garlits hit the throttle — and everything exploded.

Born January 14, 1932, in Tampa, Florida, Garlits fell in love with speed after a high school shop teacher showed him Hot Rod magazine. By 1950, he was racing. By 1955, he built his first dragster — Swamp Rat I. Thirty-seven dragsters later, he was unstoppable.
The sport was raw, dangerous. Drivers sat inches from fire-breathing engines. Mechanical failure often ended careers or lives. But Garlits didn’t just survive — he innovated.
After the 1970 accident, he moved the engine behind the driver. A small change? No. It redefined Top Fuel dragsters forever. Every modern dragster traces its design to that moment of genius born from tragedy.
Swamp Rat became a legend. He broke records: 170 mph… 180… 200… 250… 270.
He won the NHRA Top Fuel Championship three times — 1975, 1985, 1986. At 54, he blazed through the quarter mile at over 271 mph, beating the heavily favored field.
The Smithsonian called his dragster a “national treasure.” NHRA named him the No. 1 driver of its first 50 years. He championed fire-resistant suits when no one else would.
And today, at 94, the boy who first thumbed through Hot Rod magazine is still the undisputed patriarch of America’s most electrifying sport.
They call him Big Daddy. He earned every word.
