Outsiders hear "Minnesota" and "wildlife" in the same sentence and immediately jump to bears, picturing nervous campers checking their tent zippers every ten minutes in the Boundary Waters. Minnesotans hear the same combination of words and think about something far more immediate and far more statistically dangerous. The deer waiting in the ditch at 9pm with zero intention of letting you pass without a negotiation.

Bears mostly want to be left alone and Minnesotans understand this implicitly. You make noise, you store your food properly, you give them space, and the bear goes about its business completely uninterested in your evening. Deer have made no such agreement. Deer stand directly in the travel lane, illuminated by headlights, looking genuinely confused about what a road is despite having lived next to one their entire lives.

The actual Minnesota fear response kicks in specifically at dusk on any two lane highway anywhere outside the metro. Eyes scan the ditches constantly. Speed drops without conscious thought the moment the sun starts going down. Every Minnesotan has a near miss story, a friend with a windshield story, or a direct personal account involving an insurance claim and a very confused look exchanged with an animal that had no plan beyond standing there.

Nobody worries about a bear wandering onto I-94. Everyone worries about the deer that's already decided to be there, right now, in the dark, exactly where your headlights are about to land.
