A debate over technician shortages is drawing attention to how warranty work is paid. In a June 2026 article, Auto Service World described comments from Bill Haas, president of AIM Auto Ignite Management, who questioned whether the industry has a simple shortage of mechanics or a problem with the jobs available to them.
Haas gave the example of a dealership technician working on a warranty campaign involving replacement of both side-curtain airbags in a Chrysler Pacifica. He said the job would pay 6.2 hours if performed as customer-pay work, but less than two hours under the factory warranty campaign.
That difference matters for technicians paid by flat rate, where earnings depend in part on the labor time credited for each job. A repair can take much longer than the time a warranty pays, leaving the technician with less income for the actual work completed.
Haas argued that pay structures, benefits and working conditions can push skilled workers out of the trade. The example reflects his account, but it raises a broader question about how warranty labor times are set.
Should automakers be required to pay technicians for the actual time warranty repairs take, or is the current flat-rate system fair?

The average vehicle on U.S. roads is now about 13 years old. High new-car prices and improved vehicle durability are encouraging Americans to hold on to their vehicles longer instead of replacing them.
That creates more demand for maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs as vehicles age. It also puts pressure on shops to find parts and technicians capable of working on older models. How old is the vehicle you drive, and do you plan to keep it?
