Poland’s electric grid bottleneck: rethinking fleet charging

As electric fleets scale, charging becomes more than a vehicle challenge. It becomes a grid and operations challenge too.

Speaking at the New Mobility Congress in Poland, Barak Sas, Electreon’s Head of business development UK & Ireland, shared a different approach:

“Bring power to the vehicles, not vehicles to the power.”

By distributing charging across the vehicle’s journey, at depots and on routes, fleets can reduce their dependence on concentrated high-power charging sessions and make charging part of the operation itself.

Zag Daily’s Athena Browning explores the challenge facing Poland’s grid, and why it could prompt a broader rethink of how we charge electric fleets.

Three Vehicles. One Road. Three Ways to Charge Wirelessly.

In western Germany, near Aachen, a truck, van and passenger car are charging wirelessly while parked, stopping and driving with Electreon’s technology hidden beneath the asphalt.

It’s all part of ERS.T-NRW, a research project exploring how wireless charging can become part of everyday fleet operations:
⚡ Stationary charging while parked
⚡ Semi-dynamic charging during stops and slowdowns
⚡ Dynamic charging while driving

The 240-meter test track simulates real-world scenarios including depot charging, loading stops, stop-and-go traffic and highway driving.

The idea: charge during normal operations instead of stopping operations to charge.

That can mean more vehicle uptime, less charging downtime and, of course, no plugging in.

𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲'𝘀 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀.

The new ICCT quarterly report shows the gap clearly:
▪ 𝟰,𝟯𝟬𝟬 heavy truck-accessible charging points across Europe - only about 20% more than a year ago.
▪ 𝟲𝟯% of them sit in just three countries: Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands.
▪ Megawatt charging is real, but still measured in 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀, not networks.

Meanwhile, demand climbs fast where policy pushes.
▪ Germany dropped road tolls for zero-emission trucks and added a CO₂ charge on diesel.
▪ ZE share of heavy truck sales went from 𝟭.𝟳% 𝘁𝗼 𝟰.𝟲% in one year (Q2 2025 → Q2 2026).

The problem isn't the trucks. Fleets can order those in months.
It's everything behind the plug - grid connections, depot upgrades, land. Those take years.

𝗪𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝗮𝗽.

Energy delivered while trucks drive, or during stops they already make. No plug. No queue. No waiting on a single high-power connection.
Roads haven't changed in a century. The vehicles did.

Electreon is heading to IAA Transportation 2026

And we are bringing something new to commercial fleet charging.

Be among the first to see what we're unveiling and join our panel discussion on how wireless charging is enabling commercial fleet electrification today.

Commercial fleets run on uptime, not downtime.

That's exactly the challenge wireless charging solves. And in Hannover, we'll introduce a new solution that expands what's possible for commercial fleets.

If you're involved in fleet operations, OEM programs, or charging infrastructure, you won't want to miss it.

Four EVs, one wireless charge

Today in Balingen, Germany, we made wireless charging history.
For the first time ever, four different electric vehicles charged wirelessly at the same time:
A full-size bus
A mid-size bus
A van
A passenger car

No plugs. No cables. Just seamless wireless power.

This milestone was achieved as part of the ELINA project, where Electreon and its partners have been proving wireless in-road charging under real-world conditions since 2022.

It also marks an exciting milestone for EMADI (Electric Mobility through Advanced Digitalized Infrastructure), a project developing the certified metering and billing framework needed to enable fair, scalable, pay-per-use wireless charging.
One wireless infrastructure. Multiple vehicle types. A glimpse of the future of electric mobility.

For commercial fleets, the charging challenge is not only about range.

It is about uptime.

Every hour a truck, bus, shuttle, or delivery vehicle sits waiting to charge is an hour it is not moving, serving customers, or generating value. It may also mean additional vehicles are needed to maintain operations, increasing fleet costs.

That is why fleet electrification cannot rely only on charging models built around long charging stops. Instead, fleets need to make the most of the natural pauses already built into their operations whether at loading docks, end-of-line stops, scheduled breaks, or while parked.

Electreon's wireless charging solutions are designed around the way fleets actually operate.

Charging while driving.

Charging during routine stops.

Charging while parked.

Energy becomes part of the daily workflow instead of an operational interruption, helping maximize vehicle uptime and operational efficiency.

For commercial fleets, the future of charging isn't just faster it's smarter.
