Something is shifting in Central Maine, and the numbers back it up.

According to the Bangor Daily News, Hermon alone approved building permits for 43 new housing units in 2025. That is notable for a town of its size and reflects the new construction we are seeing throughout the area.

Statewide, Maine communities approved 7,499 housing units in 2025, exceeding the state’s annual housing-production goal by approximately 9%.

For excavation contractors, those numbers show up as real activity on the ground: wooded lots being cleared, foundations being dug, driveways being built, septic systems being installed, and land that has sat undeveloped for years finally becoming home sites.

Every new home starts long before the framing goes up. Proper clearing, grading, drainage, foundation excavation, septic work, and driveway preparation determine how that property will perform for decades.

Our latest blog explains what the excavation process for a new build actually involves, and what we are currently seeing on job sites around Hermon, Bangor, Brewer, and the surrounding communities.

Have you ever had septic issues? What’s your biggest horror story?

A backup in the house? A soggy yard that would not dry out? A smell you hoped would go away on its own?

Septic problems have a way of becoming memorable, usually because they are messy, stressful, and expensive. The good news is that many systems give warning signs before they completely fail.

Here are a few things homeowners should pay attention to:

-Slow drains throughout the house
-Gurgling sounds from sinks or toilets
-Soggy or unusually green areas near the leachfield
-Unpleasant odors outside or inside the home
-Sewage backing up into drains, tubs, or toilets

Not every slow drain means your septic system is failing. But when several signs start happening at once, it is worth having someone take a look.

Catching a problem early is almost always easier and less expensive than waiting until the system stops working altogether.

At Byers Excavation & Paving, we handle septic installation and replacement throughout Hermon, Bangor, Brewer, and the surrounding area.

We are happy to look at what is happening and give you a free and honest assessment.

What does your driveway look like right now?

Be honest. We won't judge.

🙋 A) It's fine. A few cracks but nothing crazy.
🫣 B) It's... not great. I keep meaning to deal with it.
😬 C) My car makes a big dip every time I pull in and I try to ignore it.
💀 D) It's basically a gravel pit at this point.

Here's the thing about Maine driveways: the freeze-thaw cycle is brutal, and what starts as a small crack becomes a big problem faster than you'd think.

You already trust us with your vehicles. The same family that keeps your truck running runs Byers Excavation and Paving, and we also handle driveways, parking lots, and everything in between.

Drop your letter below. And if you're a C or a D... it might be time to make a call. 😄

Know someone who keeps saying they need to get their driveway done? Share this post with them and make sure they tell us who sent them.

Your driveway and your lawn work together more than you think.

If water runs across your driveway or collects along the edges, it can weaken the base underneath.

Over time, that can lead to:

Potholes
Cracking
Washouts
Soft edges
Sinking areas
Ice buildup in winter

A driveway is only as strong as the ground and drainage around it.

That is why grading is such an important part of protecting your property. When the yard is shaped correctly, water has a clear path away from the driveway, garage, foundation, and other areas that need protection.

This matters whether you have asphalt, gravel, or a private lane.

If your driveway keeps washing out, holding water, or forming potholes in the same places, the real issue may be more than the surface.

Byers Excavation & Paving provides grading, drainage, driveway repair, excavation, paving, and site prep services in Hermon, Bangor, Brewer, and surrounding areas.
