No reason to not stop for school busses with red lights on! Pay attention, people! Two Hands on the Wheel, Eyes on the Road.

Each school day, there are thousands of students riding school buses. However, there has been an increase in stop arm violations occurring in our community. In 2024, there were 142 stop arm violations. This is the highest number of stop arm violations for the last three years. So far in 2025 there have been 40 stop arm violations, one which occurred on the first day of school.

The Duluth Police Department is encouraging our community to continue working together to lower these violations to keep our children safe.

“The safety of students is all our responsibility, and one stop arm violation is too many,” said Sergeant Mike Jambor. “The Duluth Police Department wants to remind those traveling to be aware of your surroundings and understand school bus lights. We are fortunate that all school buses serving Duluth students are equipped with high quality camera systems for the sole purpose of holding violators accountable. If you violate these laws, expect a citation.”

While you’re traveling, remember to slow down and prepare to stop when you see a bus with flashing yellow lights, as this indicates the bus is preparing to stop. When the bus has red flashing lights with the stop arm extended, you must stop and wait until the bus continues driving.

The Duluth Police Department has been proactively patrolling around the schools to ensure the safety of students, but you can also be aware of your surroundings when traveling throughout the City of Duluth.

“Remember to be aware of the lights on school buses, put down the distractions, and watch out for others while traveling,” said Sergeant Jambor. “Doing these simple things will increase the safety of students and help lower stop arm violations.”

WAIT until you are to YOUR left turn lane before moving into it!!! I missed a head-on crash by merely FEET today! I was south bound on Haines, signaled and moved into the left turn lane where my lane begins. An elderly gentleman northbound taking a left moved into my lane in front of me instead of waiting until the start of his lane. I stopped and he swerved around me. He's lucky a vehicle hadn't pulled up beside him! Pay attention, people! Don't be in such a hurry!
