The Mazda RX-7 Savanna was initially launched as the successor to our Savanna series. It was built around Mazda’s “The pursuit of driving pleasure” slogan and came with an upgraded 12A rotary engine.

As its name suggests, the Savanna RX-7 roamed the world dominating the competition. With a resounding 100 wins in the International Motorsports Association (IMSA) series’ races, the name Savanna really meant something.

In 1991, Mazda had one last chance to win Le Mans. It was time to leave it all on the track. In typical Le Mans fashion, the race was brutal. With three hours left, the Mazda 787B was holding strong in second. After a sudden mechanical failure forced the leader to retire, all eyes were on Mazda. When the checkered flag waved, we had made history — becoming the first Japanese manufacturer to win Le Mans, and the first and only rotary engine to ever claim the podium. A 24-hour race is no easy feat, but when you’re dedicated to the craft, it’s far from impossible. 🏁
