Our final Alaska Short takes us back to Denali.

Staying near Denali National Park can get expensive, but we found Denali Grizzly Bear Resort to be a very nice, more moderately priced option for our trip. Our room had the warm knotty-pine Alaska feel, and right outside the back door was the Nenana River.

One evening, my wife and I sat outside for quite a while just listening to the river and enjoying the setting. It was one of those simple moments from the trip that we really enjoyed.

We also stopped at the beautiful Grande Denali Lodge and spent some time around the Denali park entrance area, with its shops, restaurants, bars and other visitor services.

And with this video, we’re wrapping up our Alaska Short series.

Thank you to everyone who followed along as we traveled more than 1,200 miles across Alaska in one week. We’ve shared a lot in these Shorts, but there is much more to the story.

Travel Route 3 is built around five things we’re passionate about:

Travel • Cars • History • Route 66 • Americana

Not every post will be about all five.

Some days we may be exploring Alaska. Another day it might be a classic car, an old Route 66 stop, a piece of history, or something uniquely American that caught our attention.

If you follow us because you love cars, there may be travel posts mixed in. If Route 66 is your thing, you’ll also see history, Americana, and plenty of other places along the way.

That variety is intentional.

Every Travel Route 3 post will connect to at least one of these five subjects — and sometimes several of them at once.

It’s Alive! 1953 Packard Thunderbolt Straight Eight Runs After 25 Years

After sitting for roughly 25 years, our 1953 Packard Clipper’s Thunderbolt straight-eight is running again!

For this first run we’re feeding it from an external fuel supply while we evaluate what survived decades of storage. The engine fires up and runs remarkably smoothly, but there are plenty of issues still waiting for us.

You can hear what appears to be a bad water-pump bearing, we have coolant leaks, and the original Ultramatic transmission cooler is badly corroded. I’ll show a close-up of that deteriorated factory cooler while the engine is running. There also appears to be an exhaust leak contributing to how loud it sounds.

But listen when we bring the RPM up—the old Packard straight-eight runs surprisingly smooth for an engine that hadn’t been started in about a quarter century.

This is the next chapter in our 1953 Packard Clipper Project. We’re documenting the car as we found it, what it takes to bring it back mechanically, the problems we uncover, and the decisions we make while preserving as much of this mostly original survivor as possible.

At the beginning of this video, you can see just how hard the vehicle was shaking as we made our way along the road. Then we crossed over the Matanuska River, carrying glacier-fed water through some incredible Alaska scenery.

That combination of rough roads, glacial rivers, mountains, and wide-open country was a big part of what made our Alaska road trip so memorable.

If you want to get out and see Alaska by vehicle, we definitely recommend renting a 4x4…or at least a vehicle with good ground clearance.
