The last couple of weeks have been a lot of brake jobs and tune-ups. Now snow tires and alignments are starting to roll in, so winter is on its way.

If your brakes are squealing, grinding, or the pedal pulses when you stop, get them looked at before the roads get slick. Salt and slush are hard on brake parts, and worn brakes don't get better in January.

If you're putting snow tires on, think about an alignment too. Potholes can throw it out of spec over the summer, and bad alignment wears new tires unevenly.

Rocker and cab-corner rust repair, from fit-up to fresh paint.

Rockers and cab corners sit low and catch everything the road throws at them, including water, slush, and salt. By the time the paint starts bubbling, the metal underneath is usually worse than it looks.

So the repair starts with cutting, not covering. The rotted metal came out, and new rocker and cab-corner metal was fitted, clamped, and welded in. Then the truck went into the booth, where the jambs, pillars, rockers, and cab corners were refinished in gloss black.

Filler over rust can look fine for a season. Replacing the metal is what keeps it from coming back through.

This tow dolly tire didn't just go flat. It came apart.

With the car still strapped on the dolly, we jacked it up, pulled what was left of the tire, and got a good one mounted so it could roll again.

Dolly and trailer tires are easy to forget about. They're small, they spin more revolutions per mile than your vehicle's tires, and they often sit unused between trips. Before you tow, check the pressure cold, look for sidewall cracking, and make sure the lug nuts are snug. A tire can have plenty of tread and still be too old to trust.

A modern, low-slung sports car on the rollback.

Cars that sit this low don't leave much room underneath, and a steep loading angle is where front ends and aero panels get scraped. The rollback bed tilts all the way down for a gentler angle, and the car is strapped by the wheels so no hooks or chains go near the underside.

On a car this age, the tie-down matters as much as the tow. Straps go over the tires instead of hooks or chains on the frame or suspension. Those underneath parts are often original and hard to replace, and they weren't built to take a tie-down load. Securing at the wheels holds the car to the deck and keeps hardware where it belongs.

This 2013 2500HD Duramax is getting a lot more than a surface-level rust repair.

We’re cutting out the damaged metal around the rockers and cab corners, rebuilding those areas properly, and refinishing and installing a new bed. There’s still work ahead, but this is the kind of repair where what happens underneath matters just as much as what the truck looks like when it’s finished.

We’ll share more as this one comes back together.
