What is the GCP all about?
Meaning and purpose. Everyone needs to feel needed and important. Taking care of animals gives us that experience.
I built The Good Citizenship Project to provide neurodivergent individuals with a chance to learn how to take care of horses at their own pace, in real time, at an actual working barn; not in a “created” environment.
There are no age restrictions, or required diagnoses. A person simply needs to be willing and able to learn and do the work.
No riding is offered; the focus is on the aspects of care surrounding horses. We clean stalls, scrub buckets, dump wheelbarrows, etc., and then spend some time grooming and interacting with Johnny (my horse.)
Members of the GCP are also offered the opportunity to participate in wellness visits from the veterinarian, farrier, and equine dentist, and are encouraged to ask questions and take part in the procedures as much as possible.
During a session, as many skills and goals from the IEP/ISP, caregiver, or individual themselves as possible will be targeted. Some examples might be: crossing the midline, following three-step instructions, distress tolerance, time management, mindfulness, eye-hand coordination, or self-advocacy.
Each session can be as short as two hours, or as long as four hours, with accommodations made where necessary and feasible.
Hourly rates start at $30, up to $45, and private pay or pay through DDS sources such as PDP, or agencies like Advocates or Rise Above are accepted. Unfortunately, I cannot accept payment via insurance at this time.
