"In 1966, Michael Nesmith joined The Monkees — a television band assembled for entertainment, not authenticity. The dismissal from the music industry was immediate: just an actor playing a musician. Manufactured. Fake.
What the critics didn't know was that Nesmith had already proven himself before any of it. He'd written ""Different Drum,"" which became a hit for Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys. He understood songwriting at a level most working musicians didn't. He could perform with anyone in the room.
But the system was built to keep him quiet. Producers controlled the recordings. Studio musicians played the instruments. The band members were supposed to smile, lip-sync, and perform — nothing more.
Nesmith refused.
He fought for The Monkees to play their own instruments, write their own material, control their own sound. He argued, pushed back, and declined to be the actor everyone wanted him to be. By 1967, the album Headquarters — made almost entirely by the band themselves — debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, briefly knocking Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band off the top spot. The ""fake"" band had done something real.
But the label stuck anyway. Just a Monkee.
After leaving the group in 1970, Nesmith did what genuine innovators do: he looked ahead and saw something nobody else was seeing yet.
In the late 1970s, watching music become increasingly visual, he developed a concept: a television program built entirely around short films where the song and the image were inseparable. With funding from Norman Lear, he produced a pilot called PopClips in 1979. It began airing on Nickelodeon in 1980. The show proved audiences would watch music, not just listen to it.
Warner/Amex bought it. They developed it into MTV, which launched in 1981.
Nesmith was asked to join the project as a creative consultant. He declined — the direction felt too corporate, too far from what he'd envisioned. When the channel launched without him, it became the platform that turned Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Prince into visual superstars and defined an entire decade of culture.
MTV didn't credit him. They didn't have to. He had already moved on.
In 1982, Nesmith won the first Grammy Award ever given for a music video, for his hour-long program Elephant Parts — produced using part of the $48 million he'd inherited from his mother, Bette Nesmith Graham, inventor of Liquid Paper. He'd founded Pacific Arts Corporation in 1974 to pioneer home video distribution, inventing the future again while the industry was still catching up to the future he'd already built once.
Michael Nesmith died on December 10, 2021, at 78 — twenty days before his 79th birthday.
He spent most of his career being introduced as a Monkee. He was also a legitimate songwriter, a country-rock pioneer, a music video innovator, and one of the unacknowledged architects of the channel that changed how music worked for a generation.
Not bad for someone they said was fake.
