Today we hosted the International 190SL Group for a discussion about the rear axles found in 190SLs and other 1950s Mercedes. We discussed the design and theory of operation of the axle as well as common issues. We also demonstrated how to set the position of the ring and pinion when rebuilding the differential. Thanks to all who attended (especially those from out of state) and for the great discussion!

Ultrasonic cleaning of valve train followers for an M136 4 cylinder engine from a 1953 170Sb. These are new old stock parts, with an emphasis on old. They were coated with cosmoline for protection and ultrasonic cleaning is a great way to strip it inside and out.

The Mercedes Benz S Class W126 produced from 1979 was the first car they made to have a windshield glued to the body rather than being held on by a rubber sealing frame. Much like the rest of the car, the gluing process was over engineered. A heating wire was embedded into the butyl glue to ease removal of the glass in the event that repairs were needed. We made use of this original wire today to remove the windshield from a 1991 300SE. By powering the wire with 12 volts, the glue was softened to make removal of the windshield easier.

Not quite brain surgery… but this valve body acts as a brain in a 722.3 transmission (from a 1982 300TD) and requires attention to detail and a steady hand to work on. Cleaning and replacement of a few springs improves shifting behavior significantly.

I'm back from a week in Paris to visit Retro Mobile 2026, an amazing event capturing the global passion of classic cars. There was lots of see, things to learn and people to meet. The biggest standout was the Mercedes-Benz Heritage booth. While many manufacturers had impressive displays (like Citroens collection of concept cars dating back to the 1930s), Mercedes stood apart by emphasizing the support of classics with a dedicate organization including a robust parts program. The booth was staff by real employees working on real projects to benefit our beloved cars, not just pretty faces with talking points. Heritage indeed creates the future at Mercedes-Benz and there is no other manufacturer which supports its heritage so effectively.

Adenauers keep finding their way to Classic Workshop! Specifically 1953 300a Adenauers. This makes the third one this year. This one was in the rear garage of a beautiful old house in Yonkers, NY. There was no way the transporter could get back there so the Japanese spec W124 230E came to the rescue and pulled the car out to the street for loading. Rust may make this car impractical to save, but it’s complete and reported ran not too long ago.
