Did you know? Itโs officially Bald Eagle season in Englewood! ๐ฆ
โWhile most of the country is bundling up for fall, our local Bald Eagles are kicking off their busiest time of year right here along the Suncoast! Here are 5 fun facts about our local raptors as they return home:
โ๐จ 1. Home Renovations Are Underway!
Right around late September and early October, Englewoodโs eagles return from their summer travels to reclaim their territories. Right now, youโll see them gathering massive sticks to refurbish their nests.
โ๐ 2. Florida holds the record for mega-mansions!
Eagle nests are used year after year, growing bigger each season. The largest bird nest EVER recorded was built right here in Floridaโa whopping 9.5 feet wide, 20 feet deep, and weighing nearly 2 tons!
โโ๏ธ 3. Englewood is an Eagle Hotspot!
Florida has one of the densest nesting populations of Bald Eagles in the lower 48 states (third only to Alaska and Minnesota). With Lemon Bay, Myakka River, and our local golf course ponds nearby, Englewood offers premier waterfront real estate for fishing.
โ๐ 4. Strictly Committed
Bald Eagles mate for life and are notoriously loyal to their partner and their specific nest tree. If you see a pair sitting together in a tall pine near Oyster Creek or over by Rotonda, youโre likely looking at a couple that's been together for years!
โ๐ฃ๏ธ 5. Eagle Movie Sounds are a Lie!
That famous, piercing "screech" you hear in Hollywood movies when an eagle flies onscreen? Thatโs actually a Red-tailed Hawk! Real Bald Eagles make a high-pitched, chittering sound that sounds almost like a giggling songbird.
