Tire Rack Street Survival

Tire Rack Street Survival It’s more than driving – it’s about living! The primary emphasis of Tire Rack Street Survival is a “hands-on” driving experience in real-world situations!

Teenagers learn from knowledgeable driving instructors how their actions govern a car's responses, what the limits of their vehicles are, and how to avoid accidents entirely. Unlike other advanced driving schools, students use their own vehicles so that the skills they learn can be directly translated to their own daily driving experiences as they drive home.

OK so this is a bit of a stretch, but.... I was going to celebrate the Illini Chapter BMW CCA back-to-back school this weekend with a picture from 2010 and their 1st year, but there are no pictures from that. So how about from 2015 when they did their 1st back-to-back weekend? Nope, still no pictures. How about any pictures from any year from the Illini Chapter, alas no. Hey guys how about some pic's?! BUT.... we gotta have something that catches the eye and keeps you all coming back right? Here's a shot from a school we did in Savannah GA back in 2015. Sadly the name of this dedicated motorhead is lost. Sorry

Greetings Heroes!

Well it's Friday again! It's the 2nd weekend in July! I hope everybody had a Happy Independence Day! When you have a granddaughter who's lives close and has a birthday the day after the 4th, things are great! Hard to be grumpy around a 7 year old. We are back hosting schools after a couple of weeks off. 2 schools (our 2nd back-to-back for the year) and a Maria's Message this weekend. Let's do an update!

We had a up and down week at the International Tire Rack Street Survival HQ. We had promises made this week on 4 schools by the SCCA. We had to postpone an almost sold out PCA school in California scheduled for this fall due to venue conflicts. Hopefully we can get that sorted out with a major assist by the BMW Club Chapter. Fingers crossed. (Thanks Dan!)

7/12 - Illini Chapter BMW CCA '26 #2 - Bruce Huber and the Illini Chapter of the BMW CCA is hosting the 26 & 27th school in their 16 year history this weekend. They were one of the first if not THE first to embrace the double school in one weekend concept. They started hosting double weekends back in 2015 and have done so ever since. They started hosting 5 years prior when State Trooper Rick Largen passionately took up the banner for TRSS and led the charge for 12 years! Bruce has the same passion and has demonstrated his skill at marketing and PR. They have 32 students for Saturday (35 seat capacity) and 21 for Sunday! Well done all!

🔺 Let's remember why we are doing this folks:

56 teens have died this week since the last time you read this update!

NOTE - I received an email comment from a reader that I shouldn't have a exclamation mark after this stat because "No one would see this as funny". My exclamation is not to try to inject humor here but to emphasize the severity of this social calamity. This is the same as a jet plane full of teens every month! We have got to do a better job training our most vulnerable new drivers. I feel our program does that! That's why this stat stays up. We gotta remember the task at hand. WE SAVE LIVES!

Many have said that Street Survival is the most rewarding thing you can do in a car club. Everyone knows a teenager—a family member, neighbor, co-worker—who needs this program. You’ll be sharing the road with them. Let's make them safer to make you safer!

Greetings Heroes!

Well it's Friday! And BOOM, just like that it's July! Happy Independence Day! Yeah it's crazy hot here and we finally have the electrical issues in the 115 year old house worked out so we have full A/C again. Let's do an update!

We had a quite week at the International Tire Rack Street Survival HQ. I think everybody has headed to the beach or the lake or the cabin in the hills... We opened 0 new schools but got big interest from a PCA Region in Ohio. Hopefully more on this later as it develops.

We are finishing our typical Summer 'break'. We had no schools last weekend and will not have any this weekend with this important 250th July 4th! Holiday. July 11th we will be back with 3 schools that weekend.

5 years ago, Circle of Excellence award winner (Class of 2017) Larry Engle leading the blind spot demo using the Fire Truck. Those are soap bubbles from the skid pad on the ground. The New Jersey Chapter has gotten great support of this fire department during the over 20 years they have been hosting the program.

Greetings Heroes!

Well it's Friday! It's still June! The big storms are over around here, for a bit at least. I'm thinking about those effected and hoping for the best for them. Let's do an update!

We had a great week at the International Tire Rack Street Survival HQ. We opened 3 new schools! All from SCCA Regions.

Al Hermans opened a school in August for his Kansas City Region SCCA. This will be their 25th school. They started hosting back in 2007 and Al took the helm in 2022.

The Detroit Region SCCA has opened a school in September. Eric Penn (Circle of Excellence Class of 2025) will be leading their 19th school. They began hosting in 2009. Eric started leading the charge in 2011!

Tim Irwin (Circle of Excellence Class of 2019) opened a school for November. This will be their 31st and Tim's 24th (at least).

A question came up on the BMW CCA Foundation Trustee's call this week about ways for the Foundation Ambassadors, or Coaches/Volunteers, or really anybody wanting to support their area school, or any school that is open for registration. If your on FaceBook, go to our Tire Rack Street Survival FaceBook page, www.facebook.com, and look for 'Events'. Every Street Survival school has an 'event page'. You can 'share' or forward that on to someone else or post it on your page for all to see! Word of mouth recommendations are still the most effective form of advertising according to our surveys. If you have any questions about these, let me know. My email is at the bottom of this.

We had 2 schools last weekend and we now start our typical Summer 'break' with next 3 weeks off (not by choice mind you).

🚗 Last Weekend’s Action - 2 Schools.

6/13 - Maria's Message #1 - Columbus, OH - our 1st of 3 Maria's Message schools this year is Saturday. For those of you new to the Street Survival Weekly and maybe don't know, we support a local charity in the Columbus OH area, called Maria's Message www.10tv.com, A recently retired Columbus news reporter, Dom Tiberi, lost his daughter to a car wreck in 2013 and since has made it a mission to provide any teen a driving educational experience so their parents won't have to go through what he did with the loss. Many of the in-car coaches come from the Columbus area's PCA and BMW CCA Chapters/Region. Street Survival receives no money for this and their students are not counted into any of our statistics other than number of schools. Many students come back and complete a full Street Survival course . Thanks Andy, Jaynee and Tim and all others for their hard work.

6/13 - New Jersey Chapter BMW CCA '26 #1 - Mahwah, NJ. The New Jersey Chapter and their lead Circle of Excellence award winner Larry Engle hosted their 36th school. It was SOLD OUT! and has 5 on a waitlist list. They started hosting in 2004 and started doing 2 schools a year, 2 years later. They are hosting the last school in July. He'll do another school in October. Thanks Larry, Ross, Jeff and the rest of the crew!!

Last weeks school by the KY Region of the SCCA at the National Corvette Motorsport Park (in the 13 acre paddock) started out a bit wet and basically stayed that way with brief moments of clearing. It was 100% dry in the classroom where I was all day. ; )

Greetings Heroes!

It's Friday! Its June! It's HOT! I'm concerned about late August if it's this hot in early June. Well, "we'll burn that bridge when we come to it".

We had a great week at the International Tire Rack Street Survival HQ. We opened 3 new schools this week, we've reached 60, completed schools or open for registration!

Matt Fraley opened a 2nd school for his Mohawk Hudson Region (MoHud Region for the cool kids). This will be in October. They have completed their 1st school in April. Great job all!

Michael Washington (aka M-Dub) and Cy Smith are bringing a Street Survival school back to the Knoxville area. The Smoky Mountain Chapter of the BMW CCA will host. This will also be in October. Thanks guys!

Gary Lund has opened a school for his Space Coast Region of the PCA in Melbourne FL. This is their 3rd school in as many years. So far, this will be our last school of the year, in mid November.

We got some great coverage for the Illini Chapter BMW CCA's back to back schools this July from ABC affiliate WQAD in Davenport, IA. Bruce Huber did a excellent job in a 6+ minute interview. Check it out at www.youtube.com. It was also picked up and posted on yahoo! News. Thanks to Gary Fong from Brandware PR for their continuous support.

We had 4 schools last weekend and we have 2 this weekend!

5/30 - Chicago Region PCA #1 - Joliet, IL. 1 seat away from a SOLD OUT! school. Dana Comolli had the troops lined up and ready to go. This was their 3rd school at the Autobahn Country Club. Great job to all!!

5/30 - Kentucky Region SCCA #1 - Bowling Green, KY. I was lucky to be involved in this school at my 'home' track in Bowling Green at the National Corvette Motorsport Park. 13 students gained life saving skills thanks to Dave Melton and crew! This was a good school at a great facility. The 50% chance of rain in the morning continued into the afternoon . Good job to all involved!

5/30 - South Bend Region SCCA #1 - South Bend, IN. The Region hosted their 26th school at the Tire Racks Headquarters and Test Track. . They are also hosting a 2nd school this year for the 1st time since 2018 and that second school will qualify for the '+1=2x$' campaign. Kim Bolinger led the charge! Strong work all!

5/31 - Potomac Region PCA #1 - Summit Point WV. Doug Hough reports - "We had an excellent TRSS yesterday (Sunday). Beautiful weather. All 20 students showed up and seemed to have a good time (as did the parents). Only glitch was that the skid pad dried up very fast, and the Summit Point water truck crew were not as prompt as we would have liked. Looking forward to our second TRSS on October 25." Great job Doug! Thanks for the report!

Greetings Heroes!

Hey everybody! It's Friday! I hope you had a great Holiday weekend. With this past weekend, we begin what's known as the 100 Deadliest Days. The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the 100 Deadliest Days for Teen Drivers—a period when crashes involving teen drivers spike. When a teen hits the road with this often newfound freedom, many underestimate the dangers of distraction, speeding, and risky driving behaviors.

AAA’s review of crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows a 30% increase in deadly crashes involving teen drivers during summer compared to the rest of the year. On average, eight people lose their lives every day in a teen-related crash between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

"During the summer, teen drivers are on the road more often, usually with friends, which increases the risk of distraction and dangerous driving habits,” said Rachel Wilson, Director of Driver Education for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Many feel invincible behind the wheel, underestimating the dangers of speeding, distractions, and not wearing a seatbelt. But crashes hit different when they happen to you —and by then, it’s too late."

Key Risk Factors for Teen Drivers

New teen drivers (ages 16-17) are nearly three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash compared to adults. The biggest contributing factors include:

Distraction: Nearly six out of ten teen crashes involve some form of distraction. Teen passengers are the leading distraction, followed by cell phones and infotainment systems.
Speeding: Almost 30% of fatal teen crashes involve excessive speed.
Driving with teen passengers: Studies show that the risk of a fatal crash increases with each additional teen passenger (NHTSA).
Failure to wear a seatbelt: Seatbelt use significantly reduces the likelihood of serious injury or death.
"Teens are inexperienced behind the wheel, and that lack of experience combined with risky behaviors is a dangerous mix,” said Molly Hart, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “More teens die in car crashes during summer than any other season. Parents must take an active role in coaching their teens and reinforcing safe driving habits.”

“Crashes Hit Different’ This Summer

The key risk factors for teen drivers also happen to be the four leading contributors to traffic injuries and fatalities for all drivers. On average, someone is killed in a car crash every 12 minutes on our nation’s roads, primarily due to these four factors.

Let's take this to heart and do everything we can to help decrease these 100 Deadliest Days for Teen Drivers!

We had a quite short week at the International Tire Rack Street Survival HQ. No new schools opened or committed.

But.... after taking last weekend off from hosting schools we have 4 this weekend!

5/30 - Chicago Region PCA #1 - Joliet, IL. 1 seat away from a SOLD OUT! school. Dana Comolli has the troops lined up and ready to go. This is their 3rd school at the Autobahn Country Club. Great job to all!! 80 degrees and partly cloudy is predicted, NICE!

5/30 - Kentucky Region SCCA #1 - Bowling Green, KY. I'm lucky to be involved in this school at my 'home' track in Bowling Green at the National Corvette Motorsport Park. I'll be leading the classroom duties and helping out where I can. The school is on their 14 acre paddock. A HPDE for motorcycles will be going on the track at the same time. The SCCA region will run a big Solo event (Autocross) on Sunday. 13 students will gain life saving skills thanks to Dave Melton and crew! I'm looking forward to getting back in the classroom for the 1st time this year. This is the Region's 8th school. 84 degrees as a high and 50% chance of rain in the morning. Sounds OK to me!

5/30 - South Bend Region SCCA #1 - South Bend, IN. The Region is hosting their 26th school at the Mother Ship (Tire Racks Headquarters and Test Track) starting back in 2008. They also ran 19 schools under the Tire Rack's hosting banner until that stopped in 2019. They've got a solid school of 13 students. They are also hosting a 2nd school this year for the 1st time since 2018 and that second school will qualify for the '+1=2x$' campaign. Kim Bolinger is leading the charge! 77 degrees and partly cloudy is predicted, sounds pretty perfect!

5/31 - Potomac Region PCA #1 - Summit Point WV. Doug Hough has a team ready for the 20 students coming to the Summit Point Raceway for their 1st to 2 schools this year. There will be 4 schools at Summit Point this year between this host and the National Capital Chapter BMW CCA. The 1st was 2 weeks ago. September and October will finish out the year there. 70 degrees and partly cloudy is predicted, now that is perfect!
