FLEET ALERT: Ford is recalling 223,472 F-150 pickups.

NHTSA campaign 26V578000 (Ford 26S69) covers certain 2023-2027 F-150s. The fuel tank may not be properly secured. It can leak fuel or detach while driving, which raises the risk of a crash, an engine stall, or a fire.

If you run F-150s in your fleet, check every VIN now.

Ford dealers will inspect the fuel tank straps and replace them as needed, free of charge. Owner letters went out September 21. Ford customer service: 1-866-436-7332.

When the heat comes on for the first time this fall, so do the musty-smell complaints.

Check the cabin air filter and the A/C evaporator drain first. Then treat the cabin.

It is 5 AM, 20 degrees, and the starter is spinning. Most of the time, the batteries are not the problem. The fuel has gelled or iced, and the filters cannot pass it.

Winter problems on modern common-rail engines are cheaper to prevent than to fix. Our new checklist covers what to do before the first hard freeze:

- Treat fuel before it reaches its cloud point. If you run biodiesel blends, use a winter additive made for them.
- Service water separators and change primary and secondary filters before winter.
- Top off tanks at the end of the shift to cut overnight condensation.
- DEF freezes at about 12°F (-11°C). That is normal. Do not overfill DEF tanks, do not add a freeze-point improver, and use API-certified or ISO 22241 DEF.
- Run a pre-winter scan: fault codes, fuel and rail pressure, DEF heater status, and any open aftertreatment issues.

Diesel is still over $6. Here is where to look for trucks burning more than they should.

1. Injector performance tests
2. DPF regen frequency
3. EGR and boost faults
4. Tire pressure

The national average was $6.199 a gallon the week of October 5, per EIA. TEXA IDC6 Truck runs the tests in 1 through 3 across the major truck brands.

Running a mixed fleet? The EPA 2027 rule is coming either way.

The 35 mg/hp-hr NOx limit starts with model year 2027 engines on January 1. What is not settled is EPA's July proposal: a shorter emissions warranty, useful life pushed to 2030, warnings instead of DEF derates, and nonconformance penalties. As of October 8, none of it was final.

Running Texas lanes this month? Read this before you fuel.

EPA granted Texas an emergency waiver on October 5 that allows diesel with up to 500 ppm sulfur through October 24, 2026. Normal highway diesel is capped at 15 ppm.

The 500 ppm fuel is only for highway engines built before the 2007 engine model year and Tier 1-3 nonroad engines. Anything with a DPF or SCR, and Tier 4 nonroad, must stay on ULSD. Engine makers warn wrong-fuel damage may not be covered by warranty.

Check pump labels. Keep receipts. Scan early if aftertreatment codes show up.

Operation Wicked Safe runs Oct 13 to 15. State Police in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont will step up patrols for speeding, aggressive, distracted and impaired driving. In Massachusetts, the State Police Truck Team is dedicating 30 troopers to inspect large trucks, buses and other commercial vehicles.

A smart week to do a thorough pre-trip. Before you roll out, scan for active fault codes, check for warning lights, and look at emissions and aftertreatment faults. Fix it in your bay, not on the shoulder.
