The Poinsettia Christmas Parade has signaled the start of the Christmas season in Greenville for more than 75 years.

The parade is named after Joel Poinsett, a South Carolina lawmaker in the 1800s who spent summers in Greenville. Poinsett is credited with finding a bright red plant and bringing it back to South Carolina. The plant is now known as the Christmas flower, the poinsettia, and it is named for Joel Poinsett. Every year, a person dressed up as Joel Poinsett in an authentic 19th century costume leads the Poinsettia Christmas Parade in downtown Greenville.
