🔧 SATURDAY SHOP THOUGHT

There’s a difference between getting a vehicle running and actually fixing the problem.

Anyone can replace a part.

Anyone can make a temporary repair.

But doing the job right means taking the time to understand WHY something failed and making sure the repair is going to hold up.

Sometimes that means spending more time than you expected.

Sometimes it means digging deeper than the original problem.

And sometimes it means admitting that the first repair wasn't good enough and going back to make it right.

I don't always get the easy jobs.

But I take pride in the difficult ones.

Because at the end of the day, I don't just want to say:

“It's running.”

I want to be able to say:

**“It's fixed.”**

That's the standard I'm working toward with Bowen's Repair.

🔧 FRIDAY FLEET CHECK

Before you shut the doors for the week, take a few minutes to look over the vehicles that are going to be working for you next week.

A quick walk-around can catch things like:

✔️ Low or damaged tires
✔️ Fluid leaks
✔️ Low oil or coolant
✔️ Warning lights
✔️ Damaged lights
✔️ Loose or damaged equipment
✔️ Strange noises or anything that doesn't look right

You don't have to be a mechanic to notice that something has changed.

If something doesn't look, sound, or feel right, don't ignore it.

Finding a problem while the vehicle is sitting in the yard is a whole lot better than finding it when your driver is 50 miles from home with a load to deliver.

A few minutes of attention today can prevent a much bigger headache next week.

**Take care of your equipment, and it'll take care of your business.**

🔧 THURSDAY TECH TIP

Sometimes the problem isn't the component.

Sometimes it's the connection.

Corrosion, loose terminals, damaged wiring, and poor connections can cause some of the strangest electrical problems.

A wire can look fine from the outside and still have a serious problem at the connection.

That's why when I'm diagnosing an electrical issue, I don't just look at the part that's supposed to be working.

I check the power.
I check the ground.
I check the connections.
I check the wiring.
And I test the circuit.

In this case, a heavily corroded connection was enough to cause problems with the system.

A $10 part doesn't fix a bad connection.

**Find the problem. Don't just replace the part.**

🔧 TECH TUESDAY

A warning light is a symptom—not always the problem.

One of the biggest mistakes I see in vehicle repair is assuming that the part associated with a problem code is automatically the part that needs to be replaced.

A code tells you where to start looking. It doesn't necessarily tell you what part to replace.

A good diagnosis means:

🔎 Verify the complaint
📋 Check the codes and symptoms
⚡ Test the electrical system
🔧 Check the mechanical system
📈 Test the system under the conditions where the problem occurs
✅ Confirm the actual cause before replacing parts

Sometimes the problem really is the component that set the code.

Sometimes it's a wiring problem, a bad connection, a power or ground issue, a mechanical problem, or something completely different causing the symptom.

Don't replace parts based on a guess. Diagnose the system.

That's how you save time, money, and frustration.

🚌 MONDAY SAFETY PSA — SCHOOL IS BACK!

School is starting back up, which means more school buses and more kids on the roads.

As a mechanic who works on school buses, I want to remind everyone to slow down and pay attention.

🚨 RED LIGHTS MEAN STOP.

When a school bus has its red warning lights flashing and stop arm extended, STOP.

Don't try to squeeze around the bus. Don't assume you have enough time. Don't let being in a hurry put a child at risk.

Also watch for kids walking, riding bikes, crossing streets, and getting on and off the bus. They don't always see you, even when you see them.

A few extra seconds of patience could make the difference between a child getting home safely and a tragedy.

Let's start this school year by looking out for each other.

Slow down. Pay attention. Stop for the bus. Protect our kids.

🔧 SUNDAY THOUGHT

Everybody screws up.

Mechanics. Business owners. Employees. Customers. All of us.

The important thing isn't pretending you never make a mistake. It's what you do when you realize you made one.

Own it.

Tell the truth about it.

Fix what you can.

And make it right.

I spent most of my Saturday working on a part replacement where the sealing of the replacement went completely wrong.

I could have tried to make excuses. I could have blamed the circumstances or said, "Well, the part was installed."

Instead, I knew it wasn't right.

So I spent about 6 hours fixing it and making it right.

That's not always the easiest choice. Sometimes doing the right thing costs you time and money.

But I'd rather lose a little money fixing my mistake than lose someone's trust trying to hide it.

I've made mistakes in my work, and I'm sure I'll make more. What matters to me is that when I do, I take responsibility for them instead of making excuses or blaming someone else.

That's how I believe a business should be built.

Do good work. Be honest. Take responsibility. Make it right.

🔧 SATURDAY SHOP STORY

Thorough diagnostics can save you money in the long run.

I had a vehicle this week that had already been looked at by two other mechanics, but neither one had been able to solve the problems.

It actually had two completely unrelated issues.

1️⃣ The hydraulic lift wasn't lifting the amount of weight it needed to.

The recommendation was to replace a roughly $2,000 hydraulic pump—without any guarantee that the pump would actually solve the problem.

I spent several hours tracing hydraulic lines, hooking up pressure gauges, testing the system, and running the pump.

In the end, the pump wasn't the problem.

The lift was severely out of adjustment.

A proper diagnosis found the problem without replacing a perfectly good $2,000 pump.

2️⃣ The backup lights and alarm stayed on even when the vehicle wasn't in gear.

The recommendation here was to replace a roughly $700 sensor, again without knowing for sure that it would fix the problem.

I worked my way through the backup light system and found the actual problem:

A $5 relay was stuck.

Two different problems. Two expensive parts recommended. Neither one needed to be replaced.

With my labor and the parts that were actually needed, I still managed to save the customer over $2,000.

That's why I believe diagnosis matters.

Sometimes the most expensive repair isn't the repair you need.

Don't just throw parts at a problem. Find the problem first.
