Communication Tips

Good communication is especially critical when it comes to effectively dealing with auto mechanics. Once a mechanic knows the symptoms of a vehicle and what’s wrong, it’s much easier for the problem to be repaired.

Before taking in your car, make a list of abnormalities. For example, does your vehicle smell different or sound strange? Is it leaking, or does it feel different when you drive it? Also, determine the frequency that these conditions occur.
Be able to describe how your vehicle was working just before it started having the problem.
Be prepared to tell a mechanic when you last brought your vehicle into an auto repair shop, and if the issue could possibly be related to when it was last repaired or serviced.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you don’t understand what a mechanic is telling you regarding your vehicle’s problem and how it should be fixed, ask for a simple explanation.

Green Bay’s pothole season is on.
“I hit a big pothole. I tried to swerve and slammed on my brakes, but it was still hard enough to rattle my teeth. Should I be worried about my vehicle?”
Hitting a pothole can do more than spill your latte. A pothole strike can harm your suspension components, bent steering parts, knocked out of alignment, or damage the tire. If you’ve gone through a pothole, stop safely and inspect the damage. If in doubt, call us to get it checked out. Please drive carefully out there.

Valentine's Day is just around the corner,
which means you're probably thinking
about getting flowers and other
thoughtful gifts for your loved ones.

While you're at it, you might also want to
consider finding a way to show your car
some love. After all, your vehicle is a
valued family member, taking you
wherever you need to go day after day.

Best of all, unlike your ex-spouse, your car
isn't picky about how you celebrate
Valentine's Day. You don't have to go to a
fancy restaurant.
All you need to do is show your daily
driver (or weekend warrior) some TLC to
keep it running at its best.

Have you been ignoring obvious problems with your car, such as an illuminated check engine light or strange noise from the undercarriage? For Valentine’s Day, you can fix those issues to make up for being neglectful. Not only will your vehicle thank you, but you might also save yourself from bigger problems (and a bigger repair bill) down the road.

What was that?

An eerie creak? A hissing black cat? The knocking and tapping and rattling of chains? Those spooky noises you’re hearing aren’t being caused by some vengeful spirit or spell-slinging witch – it’s your very own vehicle telling you that something is dreadfully wrong under the hood. To avoid your vehicle becoming possessed by more serious mechanical issues, Quality Plus Auto Sales and Service is here to tell you why your car is making spooky sounds.

Spooky Sound #1: Clicking or Grinding

While giants may grind up your bones to make their bread, your vehicle is making that noise for an entirely different reason. When your brake pads begin to wear down, you may start to hear an eerie screeching noise each time you press on the pedal. If your brakes have completely worn away, you’ll hear a loud grinding noise. It’s best to take your vehicle in for servicing to ward off the scariest thing of all: failing brakes.

Spooky Sound #2: Rear Rattling

If you begin to hear a rattling noise as you drive, you have a bigger problem than the skeletons in your closet. Check to make sure your teeth aren’t chattering, then check your exhaust system. If you begin to hear a rattling noise as you drive, your car’s exhaust system might need a tune-up.

Spooky Sound #3: Flapping

A sound like the flapping of a bat’s wings may be the cause of a broken fan belt. Depending on how loud the noise is, flapping is a sign that something is worn and needs to be replaced in the near future.

Spooky Sound #4: Metallic Clacking

If your car sounds like a mournful ghost rattling its chains, you may have a problem with your CV joints. These joints are located at the end of the axles, and could potentially be on their way out.

Spooky Sound #5: Tapping or Hammering

It’s not a raven tap, tap, tapping on your chamber door. It’s your car’s bearings! This noise is typically associated with problems related to rod bearings, which could require removing the entire powertrain to fix.

Spooky Sound #6: Hissing

If you’re hearing a hissing noise as you drive, you could have a leak in your cooling system.schedule a service appointment with us and we find that’s not the case, well...let’s hope your neighbor’s pet boa constrictor hasn’t escaped and made a new home somewhere in your vehicle.

10 Ways To Make Mechanics Love You

Mechanics aren't always the happiest people on the planet, dealing with major car problems, people upset about their major car problems, and major problems with,...you get it. It might seem difficult to win the affections of your mechanic, but we think there are some surefire ways. Here are 10:

1) Clean out your car- Mechanics have to get used to working in cramped spaces, which can be difficult and frustrating. If you're a slob who doesn't bother to clean out their car, you're only complicating the situation for your mechanic. Your mechanic shouldn't have to move 14 empty Red Bull cans to get under your dashboard. Plus it's just gross.

2) Don't try to watch them work on your car - You wouldn't want someone standing over your shoulder while you prepare the week's TPS reports, would you? Give your mechanic the space to properly perform their job. No one wants to be scrutinized while they work, especially when it's work that can oftentimes be frustrating by itself. Unless you're an apprentice, don't try to watch.

3) Don't automatically distrust - A segment of dishonest mechanics gives the entire industry a bad reputation. But don't let the bad apples taint your perception of everyone. Trust the person you're doing business with until you can't. Afford them the same respect as you would to anyone in a similar profession, they just want the opportunity to prove you right.

4) Share your positive experiences - When a mechanic has done a great job for you, let everyone know. Submit a review on Google, recommend your friends and family, and let the management of the shop know how satisfied you are. The industry isn't used to customers sharing their success stories, since the negative experiences tend to take center stage.

5) If you don't understand how to do car repairs, don't try to do them yourself - Saving a buck is always good, but you need to know what you don't know. If you have no automotive experience and aren't very handy, don't try to repair your own transmission. Mechanics frequently deal with people who have tried to fix problems themselves, and only made them worse. This goes for friends who claim to know how to work on cars as well.

6) Understand that it's a business - For some reason, there are customers who assume that mechanics should do work for free, ignoring the fact that if they do, they won't be able to pay their own bills. Automotive repair is a business, and while some shops offer free diagnoses, and other excellent discounts, it's important to remember that you're exchanging money for services, and that you need to respect that dynamic.

7) Tell them the symptoms, not the diagnosis - When bringing your car in after it's started having problems, let your mechanic know the car's symptoms. What is the car doing? Don't tell them what you want them to replace, unless you're willing to accept full responsibility in the case that you're wrong. A properly trained mechanic will not only be able to determine what is causing your car's issues, they will also point out other problems you may not have noticed.

8) Don't get mad if they have to adjust your seat - It can be annoying when you get your car back after it's been worked on and the seat has been moved, but different people are different sizes. In order to drive your vehicle into the bay, a mechanic may need to adjust your seat, and unless he or she is able to mark exactly where your seat was before it was moved, which is an absurd expectation, they will leave the seat in the last position. This is a crazy thing to complain about.

9) Take care of your car - A well-maintained car is much easier to work on for a mechanic, and much cheaper for you. A car that has been neglected and abused is much more difficult to work on, since the problems are more extensive and entrenched. It's like going to the doctor after you've been eating only sticks of butter for 10 years, the problems are harder and more difficult to fix.

10) Come back - If everything has been done properly and you've been treated well and charged a fair price, there is no bigger compliment you can give your mechanic and shop than repeat business. This is also the best way to build and foster a relationship with a mechanic that you can trust for years, which is more valuable than most people realize.

Does your car's interior smell bad?
It could be the cabin air filter, which prevents dirt, dust, smoke, smog, pollen, mold spores, and exhaust gases from entering the cabin. A dirty cabin air filter is bad for your lungs and for your vehicle's A/C system, while a new filter will help you and your car breathe easier!
