The Late Cruz Trevino, 78, is being posthumously honored as this year’s LaSalle Days Grand Marshal.
Mr. Cruz was born in Asherton, Texas on Sept. 14, 1939. Born to migrant seasonal farmworkers, Cruz learned the value of hard work and the importance of family early on in life. As the oldest child in his family, he had to grow up quickly in order to help support his family. Long days picking everything possible in the fields across this great nation instilled in him a solid work ethic that would help shape the man he became in life.
In 1948, the Trevino family established roots in Weld County when Cruz’s father started a small one-truck operation, J Trevino and Sons. As a young man, Cruz took over his father’s one-truck operation and with hard work and dedication, he expanded his father’s operation to a larger trucking organization: Trevino Trucking which he owned and operated along with his sons. This year, Trevino Trucking is celebrating 70 years in Weld County.
On Jan. 31, 1961, Cruz married Yolanda (Torres) in Greeley, CO. In 1968, they moved to LaSalle, CO where they raised their six children: three sons, Tony (Delia) Trevino of LaSalle,; Adolph (Angel) Trevino of Aurora, CO; and Lee Trevino of LaSalle; and three daughters, Irene (Leopoldo) Rivera of Greeley; and Lisa (Chris) Callaway of Evans, CO. Their daughter, Margo Trevino, died in 1982. His wife Yolanda died in 2011.
Cruz loved classic cars, he enjoyed restoring them and cruising around in them. A few years ago, Cruz fulfilled a childhood dream when he took a cruise down historic Route 66 in one of his classic cars. Cruz also enjoyed spending time with his animals at his farm. Above all else, Cruz appreciated spending time with family. Cruz was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Greeley.
Cruz passed away June 18, 2018. Leaving behind his five children, 14 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
The Trevino family is grateful to the community for giving their father the opportunity to raise his family and build his business. Cruz loved his little town of LaSalle and was truly looking forward to the honor of serving as Grand Marshal of LaSalle Days 2018.
His family is thankful that even after his death in June, the town of LaSalle will let him serve as Grand Marshal, it is an honor that his family humbly accepts on his behalf.
