FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Police Vehicle and Wrecker Struck at Active Crash Scene on I-96
Ottawa County, Michigan | January 3, 2026
Slow Down Move Over Inc., a national nonprofit organization dedicated to roadside safety and first responder protection, is calling attention to a serious incident that occurred Saturday evening on eastbound Interstate 96 in Wright Township, Ottawa County, Michigan.
At approximately 7:37 p.m., Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a motor vehicle crash. While deputies were securing the scene and a licensed wrecker operator was actively recovering a vehicle from a nearby ditch, a secondary crash occurred approximately 20 minutes later.
A 21-year-old driver traveling eastbound lost control of his vehicle while approaching the clearly marked incident scene. The vehicle struck a sheriff’s patrol unit with emergency lights activated before sliding into the wrecker positioned for recovery operations.
Both the patrol vehicle and the tow truck sustained damage. Neither vehicle was occupied at the time of impact, and no injuries were reported. The incident remains under investigation by local authorities.
“This incident underscores a persistent and preventable risk faced daily by law enforcement officers, tow operators, and all roadside responders,” said Slow Down Move Over Inc. “Emergency lights do not create a safety bubble. Compliance with Move Over laws is not optional. It is a legal and moral obligation.”
Michigan’s Move Over Law requires motorists to slow down and move over when approaching emergency, maintenance, utility, and service vehicles stopped along the roadway. Failure to do so continues to result in secondary crashes, property damage, and far too often, serious injuries and line-of-duty deaths.
Slow Down Move Over Inc. urges all motorists to remain alert, reduce speed, and change lanes when approaching roadway activity. Accountability, enforcement, and public education remain critical to preventing future incidents.
