ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) can struggle in rain or snowy weather because the sensors, particularly cameras and radar, rely on clear visibility to function accurately. When it’s snowing or raining heavily, these sensors might get obstructed or confused by the elements.
- **Cameras**: These can have difficulty detecting the road, lane markings, and other vehicles when there’s snow or rain on the lens. The rain on the camera lens can obscure the view, causing the system to misinterpret the surroundings or fail to recognize critical visual cues like lane boundaries and road signs.
- **Radar**: While radar is less affected by visual obstructions like rain or snow, heavy precipitation can still scatter radar waves, reducing the system’s effectiveness in detecting objects or obstacles.
- **Ultrasonic Sensors**: These may also be affected by wet conditions, as water can dampen the signals, reducing their range and accuracy.
This is why ADAS systems often recommend caution or even temporarily disable certain functions in these weather conditions.
