Ever driven a road that was carved into cliff faces by hand?

Rim Rock Drive in Colorado National Monument is a 23-mile scenic route that hugs the canyon rim—complete with sheer drop-offs, rock tunnels, and views that make you slow down (in the best way). What many visitors don’t realize: much of this “daring roadway” was built during the Great Depression by WPA and CCC crews, working along the natural rim line with far less machinery than you’d expect. The final pieces weren’t finished until 1950.

Today, you can still feel that history in the details:
• Three sandstone tunnels bored through the rock to keep the road close to the rim
• Overlooks that reveal layers of geologic time—from ancient canyon-bottom formations to younger rim sandstones
• Iconic viewpoints like Independence Monument and the Coke Ovens
• A drive that’s best enjoyed slowly—anywhere from about 45 minutes to a couple of hours with stops

Pro tip for planning: conditions can change, and Rim Rock Drive is occasionally closed for snow, ice, or rockfall—so it’s worth checking before you go.

Staying at Junction West? Save this for your Rim Rock Drive day—then tell us which overlook you’d pick first: big canyon views, tunnel photo stop, or geology moment.

A red-rock legend lives just minutes from Grand Junction. In 1911, President William Howard Taft proclaimed Colorado National Monument—protecting the dramatic sandstone canyons and towering monoliths locals had admired for years.

Behind that designation was John Otto, the “Hermit of Monument Canyon,” whose persistence helped turn a wild, rugged landscape into a protected place. He even became the monument’s first official caretaker, carving early routes into the cliffs (including the steep Serpents Trail) with nothing but grit, a pickaxe, and a few four-legged companions.

And the most unforgettable chapter? On July 4, 1911, Otto climbed Independence Monument and raised an American flag on its summit—an Independence Day tradition the community still honors.

Today, the monument’s canyons and stone spires feel more like a national park than a “typical” monument, and it’s easily explored via Rim Rock Drive, a scenic rim route with sweeping views just west of town.

If Colorado National Monument is on your list, consider staying at Junction West Grand Junction RV Park so you’re close to the drive and views—sunrise or sunset on Rim Rock Drive: which would you choose?
