The Mazdaspeed Miata often gets described as Mazda finally answering the question, "What if the Miata had a turbo?"

Turbo 1.8, 178hp, 2004 into 2005, cut short by a fire at the production facility. No real lag, boost builds smooth, with a distinct shove around 4,500rpm. The most common owner complaint isn't the power, it's the 4.1 rear gear: great for keeping the turbo lit, less great at highway revs.

Production ended early after a fire at Mazda's supplier, limiting total production to around 5,400 cars. That wasn't part of the plan, but it helped turn the Mazdaspeed into one of the rarer factory Miatas.

Even today, the Mazdaspeed occupies its own corner of Miata history. Some enthusiasts still prefer the lighter, naturally aspirated cars. Others wouldn't own anything else. Either way, it remains the only factory-turbocharged Miata ever sold in the U.S., and that alone gives it a unique place in the story.

Imagine seeing this advertisement in 1989.

Most manufacturers were talking about more power, more luxury, or more technology. Mazda went in a completely different direction. Their headline wasn't really about a new car at all. It was about bringing back a feeling.

The original Miata asked a simple question: what if a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive roadster could be fun again without being complicated? Double-wishbone suspension, a slick five-speed gearbox, and just enough power to make every shift worthwhile. It wasn't trying to win the horsepower wars. It was trying to remind people why they enjoyed driving in the first place.

Looking back, it's hard to think of many advertisements that captured a car's personality quite so well. Thirty-five years later, the formula still feels remarkably familiar.

1997, last year of the NA. No fireworks, no big send-off campaign: the Miata NA STO Edition got Twilight Blue paint, a handful of trim changes, badges nobody really needed to read to know what it was.

That blue is the thing people remember. Photos never quite nail it. Some days it reads almost gray, flat under cloud cover, then the sun catches it right, and it looks nothing like the last picture you saw of it. Ask five owners what color their car actually is, and you might get three different answers.

Mechanically, it wasn't chasing anything new. Same 1.8, same five-speed most buyers already knew inside out. The changes were smaller than that: a torque brace here, some subtle interior trim there, the kind of detail you'd only notice if you'd spent real time in one already.

It wasn't the fastest NA off the line, wasn't the rarest special edition Mazda put out either. It was just a clean way to close the book on a generation that never needed dressing up to make its point.

Fifty. That's the entire production run of the 2003 Club Sport, and Mazda didn't make it easy to love at the time.

No air conditioning. No radio. No power steering. No windblocker. This was a Miata stripped down to exactly what SCCA competition needed and nothing else, wearing only Classic Red or Pure White with zero badging to give it away.

What you did get told a different story. A factory limited slip diff. Bilstein "Hard S" sport suspension. Sport package brakes. A 4.3 rear end paired with the 5-speed and the VVT engine, a combination you couldn't order any other way that year. Buyers could spec a factory hardtop with no soft top at all, or go soft top only.

It flopped as a showroom car. Enthusiasts said they wanted stripped and raw, then let the options sit on dealer lots. Two decades later those same cars are the ones autocrossers hunt down, because Mazda had already done the weight-saving work for them.

Sometimes the car nobody wanted is the car everybody wants twenty years later.

Some colours just seem to work on a Miata. Thirty years apart, Mazda proved it twice.

This ND 35th Anniversary Edition is finished in Artisan Red Metallic, paired with a tan interior that immediately brings to mind one of the most memorable special editions of the NA era: the 1994 M Edition. Merlot Mica paint, tan leather, a tan top, and just enough luxury to make owners feel like they had something a little different from the standard roadster. The similarities aren't exact, but they're hard to ignore.

The 35th Anniversary backs up the looks with a specification enthusiasts would have happily selected themselves: BBS wheels, Brembo brakes, Bilstein dampers, and all the sharpness that makes the ND such a rewarding car to drive. But if we're honest, it's the colour combination that stops people in their tracks.

What's interesting is how often Mazda returns to this formula. Give a Miata a deep metallic paint, a tan interior, and a limited-production badge, and enthusiasts seem to fall for it every single time.

Imagine it's 1989 and this lands on your desk.

A brochure for a brand-new Mazda roadster with a bold promise: "Suddenly, there's a whole new meaning to driving for the pure fun of it."

At the time, the idea almost seemed out of step with the industry. Sports cars were getting heavier, more complicated, and the affordable two-seat roadster was becoming a memory of another era.
Then Mazda came along with a lightweight machine, a simple manual gearbox, pop-up headlights, and a philosophy that seemed almost stubbornly old-fashioned. Three colors. Three configurations. No top, soft top, or hardtop coupe. Nothing more than what you needed to enjoy the drive.

Of course, nobody opening this brochure could have known they were looking at the beginning of the world's best-selling roadster. They just knew Mazda had built something that felt different.
